"Rerecord not fade away!"
Does anyone remember the advert in the '90s with a skeleton advertising Scotch video tapes using the catch phrase "Rerecord not fade away!". I also remember the adverts (and the tape casings) mentioning that they had a lifetime guarantee and that they'd replace the casette if it failed.
Has anyone taken up this offer recently? I ask, as I've moved to a house where I can just about see the factory near Swansea where these tapes were made and it got me thinking. Rhey haven't been made there (or anywhere else for that matter) for quite some time now - I remember reading they sacked a large number of people when the production line was stopped. So, they promised a "lifetime" guarantee - how do they fulfill the promise if they don't make VHS tapes any more? For a while I only bought tapes because of this guarantee, but have since realised that the recordings are far more important than the media used to record it on so if it did "fade away", a replacement tape would be small consequence. Plus, even scotch tapes only lasted a couple of months with the amount of re-recording, stopping, rewinding, pasusing I used to do on my VHS recorder before there were so many spits and lines on the recordings, I would throw the tape in the bin and use a new one (then putting it down to my VHS recorder actually causing physical damage to the tape). |

maybe I should introduce one of mine to a poweful magnet and then turn up at reception in Gorseinon
![]() Seriously though - if I still have any left (massive clearance before the house move) they'll almost certainly have stuff I'd never want to lose on them as I now no longer have VHS playback/record capability and now only have a handfull of tapes for keepsake. |

I'm guessing they probably have a stock pile somewhere of blank tapes for this very purpose. With time, VHS will fade away and so will the need for the tapes, and eventually they will become nothing more than a memory - some people will still continue to use them (as with audio tapes and records).
