The adapter is for using the memory stick in another Sony product.
I have a port on my Vaio laptop and my uncle has the port on his Bravia TV.

Usually the memory stick will go in the camera and the adapter alows you to use the stick on card readers on the PC.

There is a number of different sized (phyical size) memory sticks. The 'old' chewing gum sized stick, A large postage stamp (as in the picture) and a smaller one. The addpater (the big thing in the picture) makes the Large postage stamp the correct size to use in products desiged for the chewing gum memeory card. For more info memory stick web site or wikipedia
