You Gotta Love The Toppy!!!
Overnight Guy

Just thought I'd start an appreciation thread for Topfield TF5800

I have owned one of these for several months now. Installed several TAPS and I have to say that with it's current set up it's the best machine I have ever seen or used. In fact... I would personally say better than SKY +

Apart from the max search speed being x3 I can't think of anything else I would wish to add to it.

It is simply The BEST!

If you are contemplating buying one then read the Humax Top 5 things you would like to add.

It seems to be short of lots of things.

Hurrah for Topfield!!! from 1 extreamly satisfied customer!

Gosh the toppy still sounds like a great PVR to enjoy. If it is close or better than Sky+ thats certainly very good.

Might not be the best idea to quote that Humax thread for the purpose of the comment. Even if you stretch to the top 10 things customers said they would love to have, do you know how many of the 'wishlist items' they have gone and put in for customers as a result of that feedback to them?
Indeed the software planned for in the next month OTA adds what might be the two remaining out of the top 10: series link capability and storing the EPG even when in standby. The wishlist items that cant be done due to hardware restrictions are found in the next PVR due this summer.

In fact it is a dizzy x6. . Actually it is so long since I used FF that I had to start a recording to check that. FF is so VCR. Always use jump keys myself.

I apologise for coming on to your thread - didnt mean to take anything away from your main points. It wasnt me that brought up the Humax...

I have many PVRs so maybe if I have the urge I'll get another one and it be the Topfield PVR next time which you recommend.

Are you using two usernames then?

Some of the stuff in the linked thread above, have already been rectified by humax, although give the toppy a few taps, and it shines.

one of the latest things ive found out about the toppy is the ability to record two things at once, while watching two separate things from the toppy on two different screens (a TV and a P.C), as long as one is a recording from the hard disk.

Richard_T, can you tell me how you watch two things at once? Sounds like a god-send when I have a scheduling conflict between the wife and daughter

first of all you need to have your toppy conected to your P.C via a USb lead.

you can then watch a recording from the toppys hard disk on your P.C and then use the toppy as normal, displaying to the TV.

You ned to download and run:
ftp server for topfield
filezilla ftp thingy
VLc media player.
and you also need enough space on your P.Cs hard disk for an entire recording.

switch on your toppy and with it all conected run ftp server for topfeild, then start filezilla, you should be able to connect to your toppy via ftp, in myu case you can find the toppy be connecting to http://192.168.1.2
start transfering the recording to a selected folderon your P.C.
Find the file thats being transfered in the specified folder and open it with VLC media player.

VLC should open and play the file as its being transfered from your toppys hard disk, although you may have to wait a few minutes for it to build up a 'buffer'
once youve watched the file you can delete it from your P.C

Basicly your just streaming and copying a file/recording from the toppy to your P.C
