Carrie Grant - "Fred had the Scottish vote"
jazza
13-03-2007
Carrie said this last night on streaming.

Whenever I hear this stupid reason about Scots voting for people just because their Scottish in any reality show, it really infuriates me. It makes it seem people in Scotland have no brain. Carrie just showed herself up to be a very small-minded person last night.

I'm Scottish and my favourite is Ray Stubbs and it used to be Tim.

I know, it's really patronising. I had to put up with the same thing during big brother.

I suppose it could be a bit because he is much more well known in Scotland, has his own shows there and everything

I don't think Colin or Zoe were ever suggested to have the irish vote because their careers are pretty London-based now.

i am not disagreeing with you I am sure it is annoying the suggestion you vote because of where you live, just adding my two penn'oth!

I cant see the offense in what Carrie said in fact i see the opposite. I take it as she s defending Scots saying that just because there is one scot in the show doesnt mean the scotish voting public are so brain dead they cant see past patronism (i think thats the correct speeling)

Was Fred on tv in England apart from Fame Academy. I had never seen him before. Mind you I'd never seen Miranda either

He's been on Mock the Week, Have I Got News for You. He also hosted a programme on the Edinburgh Festival on ITV for a couple of year but I'm not 100% sure if it was shown all over the UK.

The frequently-made suggestion that all Scots vote with their sporrans at all times is pretty insulting.

I do agree with Carrie there are some Scotts who will vote for Fred just because hes Scottish the same as there are some Irish who will vote for Colin just because hes Irish. My votes have all gone to Tara pure entertainment ps i am Scottish

Well there does seem to be the thing that it is mostly Scots that have heard of Fred therefore most of his votes will probably have come from Scotland but that doesn't mean that all Scots would have voted for him.

Of course all people from Scotland are not like that, but I'm sure there are a few people from Scotland who do vote just because of where he's from. But, hey, it almost always happens on reality shows (and not just for Scotland) so it shouldn't be taken too seriously.. unless they end up winning when they blatantly don't deserve to or something.. but the home-vote is never usually that big.

That annoys me too. I really Fred - he's a nice bloke - but I wanted Tim to win. My favourite now is Stubbsy.

It annoys me too and I agree, it's very patronising.
I remember they kept saying it all through the X Factor too (and the fans of other acts using it as an excuse).

I don't really watch Fame Academy or X Factor much, but I did pick up on this when I did see them.

It happens all the time with any kind of voting - don't take it so personally.

There is :-

The Scottish,Irish, Welsh vote.
The teeny vote.
The pink vote.
The ethnic vote.
The housewives vote.

etc etc All meaningless.

Personally I thought Fred may have attracted the "Comedians who aren't funny" vote.

There certainly was an attempt by BBC Radio Scotland to persuade people to vote for Fred. However, the population of England is roughly ten times bigger than that of Scotland, so I'm not sure how much this "Scottish vote" matters.

England: 50,431,700 population
Wales: 2,958,600
Northern Ireland: 1,724,400

Scotland: 5,094,800

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demogra...United_Kingdom

In fact, the total population of the UK excluding Scotland is 55,114,700 — not quite eleven times the population of Scotland but getting towards it. I guess the Scottish vote can be a factor, but perhaps it's not an enormously significant one.

Its a statistical statement - albeit based on a guess. it doesn't mean that all people from Scotland will vote for him. It just means that significant numbers in terms of the voting will. In this case I suspect that a significant number would be a pretty low number - it would only take a few thousand people to be upset by what Lesley said to keep Fred iin as I doubt there are many votes anyway.

it was the same in X Factor with the MacDonalds - not all Scots liked them, not all of their support came from Scotland and scots voted for other people but that doesn't mean that they would have survived as long as they did without home support.

But that's because Fred works for BBC Radio Scotland.
It's the same way Radio One are trying to persuade people to vote for Colin.
