Strangely, I've never heard an old Negro-spiritual sounding like that. However, I do agree that it's a "Black singer" thing (and/or people trying to copy them)
Riffing should be an embellishment, not the whole structure or you simply do end up sounding like your foot has been run over and that is not a good sound whatever the excuse.
