Just thought I would throw my two pennorth in about his!
Come Dancing was absolutely required viewing back in the day. As another poster has already said, it was a knockout competition between the UK regions.
The competitors were amateurs who had already competed at events in their region in order to decide who went forward to represent their regions. There was a set criteria in place - you or your parents had to be a native of the region you wanted to represent. It was generally accepted that Wales was an 'easy' region to qualify for which led to lots of partnerships claiming Welsh ancestry!
Each round consisted of the two couples from opposing regions taking the lfoor at the same time. Each round was judged by a panel of three. It started with the panel being made up of dance-world names, but later programs included the 'celbrity judge' who often knew squat about dancing but who was currently appearing in pantomime and wanted thwe TV exposure!
The programs ran as follows:
Round 1 - Ballroom
Round 2 - Latin
Round 3 - Old Time (what is is called these days?)
Interval - Pro dem
Round 4 - Formation
A round was added during the 80's to include a section for disco dancing or 'freestyle' (whic led to a few eyebrow-raising entries!)
Donnie and Gaynor did seem to be the resident Pro dancers, but there were the occasional departures. Fairly sure that the Stopfords and the Hiltons took a turn or two as well as champions from other genres of dance.
I would like to see it's return in part, but would prefer to see the European competitions televised instead, Pro AND Amateur.

I remember when I was a little girl - it was on later than my bed time but as a treat I was allowed to stay up and watch it - I loved it
