I don't know why RTD's departure should have the Beeb so worried. He's hardly been writing groundbreaking sci-fi. I think the success has been more down to the central characters rather than the plots.

Even more "RTD is rubbish" threads for the next few years.

RTD didn't create Who. Sure he is responsible for it's successful relaunch for which I will always thank him for but to suggest that it couldn't survive without him at the helm is ridiculous. There are plenty of visionaries in the industry who would I am sure love to have a stab at doing Who.

I am sure there are plenty of people out there mossy who ae poised at their keyboards ready to post a message praising a RTD script...when he has penned one deserving such praise!

I do think it will carry on without him, however I cannot see him letting go completely

I wouldn't take the reference to season 7 too seriously - I expect he has just plucked a year out of the air to illustrate the fact that he will not go on forever.

As for the suggestion that the series could not survive without him, that's just a bit of journalistic licence. It's not backed up by any facts or quotes from the BBC, so relax!

Oh shut up. The Slitheen haven't even been in the show for a year. And i don't see them in this years series as of this moment. So stop moaning. Slitheen where only in three episodes - 2 stories - Just like the kandyman (three episodes) Was he in for more than one series? No. He wasn't. (I happen to like the Slitheen btw so i don't really think it's fair to compare them to the Kandyman, but if you don't like the Slitheen im sure you don't love something as lame as the Kandyman...)

Getting rather cocky these days telling people to shut up and if they don't like any of those episodes because you do then they don't know good TV.

Seems Phil Collinson had an out-of-body experience and briefly possessed NAF!

It's not cockyness at all. RTD is a great writer (Just like most of the others on the show) and im sticking up for him cus' some pathetic person is moaning about something that happened two years ago. Maybe AOL and WW3 wheren't the best episodes, but i'd only really take the "Hurrah - more Slitheen" statement seriously if the Slitheen actually did come back last year and returned this year.

And it's just sad that you come on here moaning about a brilliant TV show just because it's not exactly the same as the classic series. I repeat it's SAD!!! If you don't like a TV show then why post about it? I can't stand Lost or Star trek but i don't go on other boards moaning about it.

Get a life or post comments that we can actually think about. I'm not saying that no one shouldn't like RTD, but if they actually gave good reasons as to why they didn't then that'd be good!

Sorry, but RTD is one of my favorate writers. I highly regard him and he's done a lot more for TV than you have so stop bloody moaning.

fantastic in your view, which I know many others share with you and you are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. the difference is NAF others are open to listening to what others think, both positive and negative and aren't blinded to it's faults whilst still appreciating the series.

you have clearly demonstrated what I have always believed about the loony fan element.

so because I don't like RTD's scripts I hate the series. very sweeping statement NAF and incorrect. think many of the other writers scripts shows his up for what they are. Moffat, Cornell, Shearman's work are far better imo. they know how to balance the telling of a good sci-fi story with emotion, drama and action. RTD cribs his off the photo stories from Jackie and Bunty.

sorry if that offends NAF but I am not one of the many who think RTD is someone to be worshipped. applauded yes but still flawed.

Above is a quote from another thread only about a week old. This so I was told confirmed that RTD would go before the 4th series. Reading both articles myself you could easily assume that Russell is either going early or late but neither article confirms this as fact. In my humble opinion (as I wrote on the other thread) I think RTD will go after or during the 4th season. If he stays too long he will suffer the JNT curse (which I also spoke about on this thread)

perhaps he will give up the reins as lead writer and Exec Producer, stay on as a consultant and still contribute the odd script. just a theory.

Maybe and that would be great. I just don't think it would be good for the series (or for RTD for that matter) to stay with that much control over the series for that long. 3 to 4 years is a good time to have stayed and a good time to go.

don't say that to NAF. you will be attacked for being disloyal and not a real fan of the new series.

I agree with you Tegan. he did a fine job as Exec Producer but anyone staying too long in that position is not good for any series. sometimes a new vision and fresh approach is needed for the series to keep moving forward.

I hope not. Remember JNT. He didn't work again after spending so long doing Doctor Who. I don't suggest Russell will not work again but if he stays too long and the series does take a turn for the worse then he will be damaged too. There needs to be a parting of the ways (pardon the pun)

think RTD will always be in demand being the 'darling' of the media these days and he has demonstrated with his past works, QAF, Casanova, Bob and Rose and The Second Coming what a great writer he can be. I just think his style of writing doesn't work for Who but again that is just my opinion.

True. I just don't think his scipts have that wow factor. They are not bad, nearly very good with some stories but when you have had stories like the Empty Child etc he just seems out classed.

couldn't have put it better myself. the scripts from the likes of Moffat, Shearman and co don't patronise the younger viewers, appeal to the older members of the audience and their stories have a pace and feel which isn't contrived, though it is in the lead writers work and they don't need to resort to juvenile humour. I guess their scripts feel more natural if that makes sense.

If you have bothered to read any of my previous posts, you will see that I did like the Slitheen. (however, I don't think that the rubber suits / CGI was particularly effective)

My comment of "Hurrah - more Slitheen" was written as bait to bring out some of those posters who don't like them - and lo and behold, some prat (that would be you), jumped up and threw their toys out the pram.

And I would be quite happy if the Slitheen returned.
