Hi

My contract with O2 expires in a couple of months and with all the talk of 2007 being the year of mass sat nav take up through mobile phones I was wondering if this feature is available now or would i be better waiting until nearer the end of the year?

Will the phones be available as a standard upgrade?

Thanks

Products like tomtom mobile are available for most smart phones and work via a separate bluetooth GPS receiver.

You can get the product either after market or with a new contract.

the question is when will phones be available with built in GPS receivers.

I believe there are a few. possibly the N95.

It wouldn't surprise me if in a year's time you can't buy a phone without a GPS capability (just like cameras). You might still have to buy software to use with it though.

I believe that O2's XDA Orbit includes the software (CoPilot, which I found to be surprisingly good when I briefly tried it) but am not sure if it depends on how much you're paying per month.

Another "phone" with a GPS built in is the Blackberry 8800, although obviously that does a bit more than a phone and costs a bit more too.

Nokia have 3 phones already announced with GPS. The N95 is now released, and will be taken by all UK networks. They are also releasing the 6110 Navigator soon. and the E90 communicator is a few months.

I doubt every phone will have it by the end of the year, but there will certainly be more.
