Are we in for another "diva" shock?

Well , I've just been looking , and I've found similarities between season 3 and the current season. In season 3 , the girls were wayyy better than the boys (much like this season). There were 3 "divas" that year that were front runners , Fantasia,Latoya and Jennifer.( like this season's Melinda , Lakisha and Jordin). Their voting demographics were split (also like this season!). One week ALL 3 shockingly ended up in the bottom 3. It was a huge shock. Could a similar incident happen this year? If yes , who do you think would go?

Yes, i think so and think Lakisha will be the one who goes.

Cue screams of racism like season 3 if it happens.

I agree PANNA1. I think Lakisha has something slightly dislikeable about her. I don't think she connects with the public as well as Melinda or Jordin. The racist thing was ridiculous! The top 5 contestants that year were all non white!

I think Melinda has the best voice and think apart from the week when Lakisha sang 'and i am telling you' Melinda has been the better vocalist.

It's interesting that a seasons rating as to whether it's good or bad seems to be determined by how many of the top competitors are black !! Season 3 is called the worst season though it got more votes in the final than any other season . Now season 6 appears to be going the same way , to me the best singers are clearly Melinda , Lakisha , Jordin and Stephanie yet already people are claiming it's boring even though combined they would knock spots off pretty much everyone in season 4 and 5 . When you read how "unlikeable" Lakisha is then you know this competition isn't about singing talent .

Sadly sometimes this is the case - let's hope not this season eh - Lakisha (and Melinda) are streets ahead of all the others, it would be a shame if either of them are voted off earlier than expected.

One of the girls considered amazing singers will definately leave earlier than they should.

And it'll be LaKisha and Stephanie I think. Allthough the latter won't be that much of a shock since I don't think anyone expects her to win anyway.

For me, LaKisha IS less likeable than Melinda, and it's based on the reaction to praise from the judges.

Of the two, I think Melinda is more humble (or doing a better job of appearing humble), and thus is liked by Simon since she "doesn't realise how good she is". She gives the audience a favourable REACTION they'll remember when it's time to vote.

LaKisha on the other hand (imo) has has been quite subdued when they've lavished praise on her, which almost has an air of expectation about the good comments, like it's not coming as a surprise to her that they liked her, ya know? She's gracious, but it's a little disconnected. Fine that might be her personality, and she doesn't want to go nuts over the comments, but it's not as good a 'TV reaction' in terms of connecting with viewers, and as such she's not as LIKEABLE (imo).

Personally I loved S3, even if I didn't like Fantasia - S5 has been the least exciting Idol so far by a wide margin. In S3, Jennifer was VERY obvious with eye-rolling and looking annoyed when the judges didn't praise her, and I do think that's why she left over the other divas that week. Nobody (imo) likes to see a blatantly poor attitude on the show.

That's all I'm saying about LaKisha - I get a little bit of a vibe that she might be like Chris Sligh - happy when there's good criticism as it re-inforces the belief that they are the best, and conversely be clearly miffed in a snotty, unlikeable way when they get criticised.

It definitely will. It's happened every single year and every year there's outrage.

I don't think it's based on how many competitors are black. I think it's based on the fact that all of the black singers tend to sing the exact same style. For once, I would love for a black person to come on and sing something besides R&B. It's about as predictable as seeing someone with a cowboy hat on -- you know they will be singing country music. Seriously, would you want four different Bo Bice's in the Top 12 during Season 4? Don't answer that Bo fans! It's just an example.

^ That's a good point actually. It would be fun to see one of the 'divas' rocking out or something for a change!

This was the complaint about the diva's in season 3 , that Latoya , Fantasia , Jennifer all sang the same style of music , despite the fact that they all had to sing the same themes as everyone else .It's actually almost as insulting as saying that all black people look the same . Fantasia sang Bonnie Rait , Willie Nelson , Elton John ,Barry Manilow , Gloria Estefan , Gershwin , Barbara Streisand and Queen and sounded totally different to the other 2 divas , however they were lumped together and said to be splitting each others vote because they were so similar when they clearly were not . However they all supposedly sounded the same and sang in the same style . Noone accused John Stevens and Matt Rogers and John Peter lewis , or Diana and Amy of singing the same style because they were white .

They did have the same vocal style, even though they sang different songs. R&B/soul singers. People can't pretend like one was pop, one was R&B and one was country.

Diana wasn't white though was she? Wasn't she Hawaiian?

No, Jasmine and Camile were Hawaiian - Diana auditioned in Hawaii because she was busy opening a Wal-Mart when the auditions were nearer her home in Georgia.

I believe Diana is of Italian/French/Native American descent.

Oh , I think I get where you're coming from now , white girls can sing pop , R&B , country , Rock . Black girls can only sing R&B !! Interesting that when Kelly won she was the white girl that sounded black , and this seems much easier to digest than the real thing , a black girl that sounds black , hence the popularity of artists like Joss stone .

I said they were R&B singers. Are you saying Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson and LaToya London are not R&B singers?
AcerBen

It will happen because the alternative is the 3 girls making the top 3. Which I just cannot see happening at all. And LaKisha doesn't have a hope of making the final 2 because of the way she is coming across.

Yes they can sing R&B , but they can sing also sing other types of music , would you really classify Kelly as just a pop singer ?

Why must you always focus on skin colour when describing singers?

I doubt there will be a diva-type shock this time around. There doesn`t seem to be the excitement with this show that there has been with the others IMHO. I still think Melinda will win it - though of course that will depend on her maintaining her current standard of singing.

The music industry is never just about singing talent, some of the most popular singers would not be classed as brilliant vocalists. It's down to a whole package, personality being one of them, for me Lakisha doesn't come across with much of a personality at all. Though she does have an incredible voice.

I agree the diva shock will happen at some stage because people who like that soulfull sound will be split on who to vote for, whereas if you like pop all you have is hayley and if you like rock then its gina!

I think 1st will see stephanie leave then lakisha but i think melinda and Jordin will make it to the end as they have enough personality to get alot of support

The only black girl I can remember that didn't sing R'n'B was Nadia Turner in AI4! I actually thought she was pretty good!
