For me, LaKisha IS less likeable than Melinda, and it's based on the reaction to praise from the judges.
Of the two, I think Melinda is more humble (or doing a better job of appearing humble), and thus is liked by Simon since she "doesn't realise how good she is". She gives the audience a favourable REACTION they'll remember when it's time to vote.
LaKisha on the other hand (imo) has has been quite subdued when they've lavished praise on her, which almost has an air of expectation about the good comments, like it's not coming as a surprise to her that they liked her, ya know? She's gracious, but it's a little disconnected. Fine that might be her personality, and she doesn't want to go nuts over the comments, but it's not as good a 'TV reaction' in terms of connecting with viewers, and as such she's not as LIKEABLE (imo).
Personally I loved S3, even if I didn't like Fantasia - S5 has been the least exciting Idol so far by a wide margin. In S3, Jennifer was VERY obvious with eye-rolling and looking annoyed when the judges didn't praise her, and I do think that's why she left over the other divas that week. Nobody (imo) likes to see a blatantly poor attitude on the show.
That's all I'm saying about LaKisha - I get a little bit of a vibe that she might be like Chris Sligh - happy when there's good criticism as it re-inforces the belief that they are the best, and conversely be clearly miffed in a snotty, unlikeable way when they get criticised.
