Virgin Media is the surprise frontrunner to buy broadband provider Pipex, one of Britain's largest independent operations, according to a report this morning.
Expression of interest for Pipex, valued at £335m, are understood to have come from Virgin Media and BT Group, the Daily Telegraph said today, without citing sources.

What's this got to do with Tiscali? Well, Virgin have made no secret of their plans to roll out their 'cable' services into non-cable areas via LLU. If the Pipex bid fails, or even if it succeeds, they may look around at the other remaining independent ISP's out there - and Tiscali is about the only large one left.

And Tiscali does have a better 'fit' (offering triple play already) then other companies.

However, saner heads at Cable HQ may still remember the shambles NTL and Telewest got themselves into in buying out all the other cable companies and may resist a new 'ISP' spending spree...

Still, something to think about...
