Lulu has had several Number One hits in the USA in the 60s thru to the 80s, when Number One hit singles were h-u-u-u-ge, she was more successful in the USA than in the UK - To Sir With Love was oddly released as only a B-side in the UK, yet was #1 in America and the movie was big too. She was also married to a BeeGee and to John Frieda who relocated to NYC and is a famous hairdresser in the USA - so, though I don't think she is exactly a household name, she is part and parcel of the British scene in the US in the 60s.
Personally I thought for anyone of my age (147) the show was quite poor. Neither Jordin nor Lakisha were remotely up to the original versions of those songs, can't believe they chose them, they can both sing but the songs were just too big and profound for them - in Jordin's case she has an excuse, she is young. Melinda gave a very 'restrained' performance of hers too, these are heart-ringing ballads and she isn't really that sort of emotional wreck, is she? Curiously, I thought all the people who tried to do something a little casually offbeat were more successful, accept Sanjaya. I cringed and ate the sofa cushions.
I watched it here in the USA on a friend's giant TV screen that is bigger than my house in London, on HD. The US show is full of Coke and Ford advertising and duff competitions and a whole load of pointless crap. I can see why Cat Deeley has been imported into the UK version, otherwise the shows would be way too short with all the junk they have to cut out. Believe me she is preferable to the US bits she is replacing.
