And I don't think Shirley Bassey was considered to be part of that invasion either, she's a stand alone cabaret style performer in the American mould. The theme was clearly non-Beatles/Stones hits of the 60s from breakthrough British bands plus Shirley Bassey and anything else they could scrape around for. I was surprised no one covered Petula Clarke - she was huge in America in the 1960s.”
Is the 'mangling' because they're allowed to choose their own songs? (So they might get it a bit wrong sometimes - they're so young they wouldn't know what was big in the 60s and what wasn't.) They must have some guidance however - someone must be showing them a library of appropriate songs to choose from, I would have thought.
(Although Melinda is my favourite overall, the standout performance for me last week was Blake with 'Time of the Season' - I can't get it out of my head! He gave it such a contemporary edge, it could have been recorded yesterday. I think that's what this theme was about - apply your own twist and don't just copy.)
