British Invasion - Wot No Beatles?
waterloosunset

I am totally puzzled by the songs on the show this week. For a while now, I've wonder why they haven't (to my knowledge) had a Beatles week. The range of songs to pick from would suit every palate. It's not as if they are barred from doing Beatles songs; Taylor did Something and Clay did Here There and Everywhere. Therefore I don't understand the reasoning for a) not having a Beatles week and b) no-one doing a Beatles song tonight.

Thoughts?

^ I thought it was strange too but then maybe there are only certain Beatles songs they're cleared to sing or something. Otherwise I'm sure we have Beatles songs cropping up much more often.

By the way, waterloosunset - what did you think of Sanjaya's take on The Kinks?

It was better than he'd been in previous weeks, but it was still a bit like a bad night at the karaoke.

I thought it was odd that none of them performed Beatles songs, although nearly all of them said they were one of their favourite British artists.

And who is Peter Noone? A Butlins reject by the looks of things.

Herman's Hermits. They were pretty big apparently.

I think it would look odd if there was a Beatles week with no Beatles involvement and as someone said they probably won't clear the records.

From what ive heard they originally planned to have a beatles night but they couldnt get the songs cleared so changed it to British invasion night.

Not just 'apparently', I bought all their singles. I was 6 at the time!

I think the theme this week was a bit mangled. As Long as He Needs Me is from the 1950s stage musical 'Oliver' - hardly part of the British rock/pop invasion of the 60s. Judy Garland was already about the 100th person covering it on her TV show about 1964. And I don't think Shirley Bassey was considered to be part of that invasion either, she's a stand alone cabaret style performer in the American mould. The theme was clearly non-Beatles/Stones hits of the 60s from breakthrough British bands plus Shirley Bassey and anything else they could scrape around for. I was surprised no one covered Petula Clarke - she was huge in America in the 1960s.

Is the 'mangling' because they're allowed to choose their own songs? (So they might get it a bit wrong sometimes - they're so young they wouldn't know what was big in the 60s and what wasn't.) They must have some guidance however - someone must be showing them a library of appropriate songs to choose from, I would have thought.

(Although Melinda is my favourite overall, the standout performance for me last week was Blake with 'Time of the Season' - I can't get it out of my head! He gave it such a contemporary edge, it could have been recorded yesterday. I think that's what this theme was about - apply your own twist and don't just copy.)

First, I was surprised that no-one sang Lulu's To Sir With Love and then she came out and massacred it herself - so that answered my question

Also suprised at Melinda singing the Oliver song As Long As He Needs Me - what was that all about
