My sons have got a Coby portable DVD player, about 15 months old now. It has been working fine (all types of disks played) but now when you put the disk in a "No Disc" message comes up. Doesn't matter what type of disk.

It doesn't sound like the disk is even spinning.

Is there anything I can try with it?

Thanks!

It's usually the laser that's duff - probably not worth repairing.

While we're on a similar subject. I bought the Le Plein Soleil DVD off an EBay shop and it plays fine on my PC, but on my JVC DVD player it comes up as cannot play this type of disc. Any ideas why? It is only 8 months old, and all my other DVDs play with no problem

It may be a problem with the disc itself.

Is it a region 2 DVD?

We have a music centre thing with a CD player which has this problem about once a year. The laser head which moves back and forth across the disc is attached electrically by a flexible flat ribbon cable, like a very thin pcb with about 10 tracks on it. This (literally the end of the cable) plugs into a socket on the main pcb.

Unfortunately it could do with being a few mm longer and a little tension is applied at one end of the travel. Gradually it works the 'plug' end out of contact and we then get a 'No disc' message. So I then remove about 50 screws to get inside, wiggle the ribbon back into the socket, replace about 60 screws (there always seem to be more to put back than I take out) and wait for the next time

It is a region 2 DVD as it says so on the back. It is not a copy or an import

I would have returned it, but by the time I had taken the postage into account and my Paypal fees, I wouldn't have been left with much

Well, we played around with the flat cable and I think that was definitely part of the problem, as the disks now spin up and I get the message "Wrong disc" instead of "No disc", and it plays CDs now (which it didn't before)

Any other ideas please?!

Thanks!

probably a region conflict, dvd player is one region and the computer is set to another.
