Unlike many on here, I've been pleased with my 4MB wireless internet service, VOD and free calls. However, I've noticed a marked downturn in the internet speeds od late. It's not that it goes slow, more that after five minutes or so, it gives up working altogether for five minutes, then carries on as before. While not massively incobenient when looking at the internet. it makes downloading podcasts impossible because they time out.

Anyone else having similar problems, or contacted Tiscali to see why it's happening?

Whilst playing online games I occasionally get pings or latency of about 900 + when it should be around the 30 mark.
Which suggests a big slow down in the internet speed for whatever reasons this is I don't know but the problem goes away again after about 5 minutes.

Haven't a clue why it does that.

With any wireless service it's importantto try and re-create the problem using an ethernet cable.

Wireless Internet is run on frequencies used by Bluetooth, Microwave Ovens, Video Senders, DECT phones and other systems so at times you may notice slow downs.

If you experience the same using a wired connection it's something that Tiscali should be able to comment on but until you can prove its not the wireless they'll likely use that as an excuse.

My wireless connection has been dodgy for about 6 months. It'll drop completely when someone nearby uses their wireless even though they are Channel 11 and I've changed to 1. Sometimes I think it's deliberate if I download a large file.

Anyway, I have to go downstairs quite often and unplug/plug the router to reset the connection.

PITA. Is it up to Tiscali to come and fix an ethernet connection to remedy it?

Its not the service its the wireless gear. Wireless is great if it works, however this is not always the case. The wireless adapter/router is susceptible to radio frequency interference, this can range from your mobile phone to microwave ovens. The more people at home get wireless adapter the more likely they are going to interfere with each other. they all work on the 2.4 GHZ range and lots of wireless equipment uses this. IMHO you are better off with wires, they are 99.9 percent reliable. I wired my whole house up with network sockets, trust me this is not hard to do, and enjoy interference free internet connection. I have a wireless laptop and I have noticed over the last year over 15 other wireless routers in my area (ie detectable from my house). These are all running 24/7. I really get some satisfaction when I turn on all my video senders, crank the microwave on for 40 mins then start using my bluetooth headset on my mobile phone! lol coz I know all those people are gonna get some serious internet connection problems.

Well, I suppose they could argue, but they supplied the wireless stuff.

You can also get HomePlug stuff which requires no additional wiring (uses electricity sockets) and doesn't suffer intereference that wireless does. Wireless in urban areas is very problematic these days as there are often simply too many people using it...

Yup - will work no probs. You need a plug at each end. It effectively works as an extension lead. No software needed or anything!

ps www.solwise.co.uk are pretty good - and nice company to deal with too
