I've just purchased a Sharp LC37XD1E and had SKY HD installed. The SKY remote is unacceptably sluggish, taking 10+ presses to get a response on the box.

I'm on my 3rd HD box and 3rd remote. However I've now discovered that it's caused by the TV - when I put it on standby the SKY remote works perfectly.

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem or anyone knows how to fix this. (Turning off the backlight is not an option).

Try disconnecting the wires (aerial, SCART, HDMI) between the TV and HD box, and see if it's still sluggish then (to check if it's interfering back down the wires).

You might try ringing SharpServ, the service agents for Sharp LCD's in the UK - it's the number on the guarantee card, they might know something about it? (there's no technical bulletin about it at Sharp).

Sharp engineer finally visited and confirmed that the TV was causing the problem. He changed the mother board, but this didn't fix it. He phoned around his colleagues, bot no one had seen this problem.
He is reporting it to the sharp people somnewhere and has left the issue open. I'll no doubt have to follow up in a few days time.

There's a thread on avforums about this issue I think. There's some speculation that it has to do with the positioning of the Sky box and it may be resolved by moving it further away from the TV!

Thanks for posting , but I tried repositioning the HD box well away from the tv and so did the Sharp engineer - no improvement.

Did you see the post by "Bad Ju-Ju" where he says using something called a magic eye fixed it for him?

yes I saw that fix ...... I've asked him for more info.

Latest update:

Called SHARPSERV ...... surprise surprise ...... they have no record of their engineer raising the issue after his call to my home. They had seen the problem with another model and suggested moving the SKY HD box away from the telly. I and their engineer had already tried this, but it had no effect.
They then said that there was nothing else they could do because it was a compatability problem - they only fix tv's which don't work. They gave me Sharp UK's phone number.

The guy at Sharp UK Customer Service wasn't really interested. As far as he was concerned the TV works ok. He told me to talk to the retailer who sold me it and ask for a alernative replacement.

I spoke to WebElectricals (retailer). Their Customer Care guy was really sympathetic and took all the details, but said that he'd have to take advice from his boss, who would speak with Sharp UK, before giving me a decision.
I don't hold out much hope for a replacement, particularly since I chucked out the packaging.

I just stuck 'sky magic eye' into Google and got 1.4 million hits and most of the first page are pointers to places where you can buy an infrared extension to Sky boxes to move the remote control sensor away from the box (so you can hide it in a cupboard f.e.). Going rate seems to be about £4.

You could spend that much on the phone to Sharp and/or Sky trying to get a fix!

Further update:

WebElectricals contacted me and explained that they wouldn't be replacing my tv, but recommended that a universal remote, in place of the SKY remote, would do the trick. They had called Sharp UK, but they denied all knowledge of any reports of a compatability problem. To be honest, I never saw this as being the retailer's problem, however the WebElectronics guy's attitude was first class and, unlike SKY and Sharp, was interested in my issue.

I've just installed the Magic Eye and the remote works fine. However, this is only a workaround, not a fix, which cost ME. What have I learned from this:

- Expect limited aftersales service from SKY.
- Don't purchase any Sharp products in the future.

A few years ago there was a model of Sharp TV, a 21 inch NICAM one, that repeatedly blew the line output transistor. I discussed the problem with Sharp technical a number of times, to be told they had heard of no other complaints, and that there was no known problems with the sets.

A couple of months later, with no progress on the 21's, I happened to be on a course at Sharp Electronics, so during a coffee break all us engineers were talking shop as usual, and I asked about this particular problem model.

EVERY SINGLE ENGINEER on the course had exactly the same problems, had rung Sharp, and been told the same load of bul**hit as me!.

So there's plenty of precedent for Sharp lying about any problems!.

In actual fact it IS the retailers problem, all your rights are against him, and it's up to him to sort it out - or arrange for it to be sorted out. His first move would probably be to replace it with an identical set, and if that doesn't cure it then offering a different make/model.
