Simple question. Say similar specs, similar price. I just want to know which brand, in your opinion, is generally the best? Panasonic or LG. Anyone know? Thanks. Wanna get 32" LCD with HD ready, HDMI etc.

Panasonic is a highly reputable Japanese manufacturer, usually considered second only to Sony. LG is a Taiwanese (or are they Korean?) manufacturer of cheap rubbish, who are already on their third name change (Goldstar, Lucky Goldstar, now LG).

LG certainly aren't the 'lowest of the low', but certainly aren't very high up the list!

Great, thanks for the info, I was going to go with the Panasonic but the slightly cheaper LG did tempt me. Sony are good but generally more expensive I find. Same with Samsung.

Anyone else with a different point of view, other brands to consider?

I wouldn't say they're rubbish. I've got a 32" HD Ready LG LCD and the picture and sound quality is great. The TV doesn't 'feel' cheap either; it looks the business on all accounts.
Oh, they're Korean by the way.

Nigel,

They're Korean, and i certainly find them the same if not identical in terms of quality to Panasonic and the various others.

Build quality on LG is certainly higher.

The name has been LG for how long ? a lot longer than the new digital formats have been around, they are only just behind Pioneer or Panasonic but still rate highly in some mags & one of the Plasma TVs took out a top european award, not bad for a company that makes cheap rubbish.

Should we brand seagate the same, in the 90's they couldn't make a decent HDD now they are one of the best.

Pionner 10+ years ago made crap Amps, now even they have improved.

But then again Sony just make crap alround

I can't comment on the LG but I have a Panasonic TX32LXD60 and can recommend it. I don't have any HD sources at the moment so can't comment on that either but from my sky+ box the picture is great so would hope and assume that any HD would be superb. Panasonic have just brought out the new model (LXD70) so there should be some good deals about on the 60, or you could get the 70 and be bang up to date. Hope this helps.

I have a 32" lg and 32" panasonic the lg has the xd technology and it knocks the socks off my panasonic lcd hd for both picture and sound.
It also has a built in free view optical sound out ect.
Don,t get me wrong the panasonic is a good tv but the build of it and the extras is prity poor.
they were both the same price.
I would defo go for an lg again .
Ive had about 8 different lcd tv,s and the lg is far the best.
Ime actually thinking of getting an lg 37" xd tech. good price at digital direct.
Also ive done some research and the lg company has been around for donkeys years

Thanks for all the opinions, seems I've got a tough choice, some say Panasonic, some LG. I was going to go for Panasonic but the last post has just pushed LG back into consideration, so I'm still deciding. Hmm, decisions, decisions. It probably won't matter at the end of the day but I want a good TV and the more experiences I hear the better I make my mind up.

I used to have a 27" Lexsor, it was OK, I liked the menus but didn't know much about the manufacturer Lexsor. It was a decent HDTV but want to upgrade to 32".

Don't worry m8, some people just can't come to terms that companies like LG & Samsung may actually make some decent products. Prob a Sony owner or works in a Sony shop.

If you were buying a car, and they were a similar price, would you buy a BMW or a Kia?.

I know which way I'd go!

But we all know they are not similar prices in fact they could be not more dissimilar.

More than happy with my LG, as a matter of interest what TV do you have.

Not the cars, but the TV's are - but the relative reputations are about correct.

I've got an old (11/12 years) Sharp 25 inch, a DV5937 - still a cracking picture, but probably the last decent CRT set that Sharp made?. I didn't buy the set (TV engineers rarely do!), I won it as part of the prize as winner of the Sharp Electronics Engineer of the Year competition - a title I won twice, and still hold, as they haven't run it since then

When it comes to replacing the 25 inch set I'll be looking for a 32 inch LCD - but as to what I don't know? - it really depends on what might 'come to hand'

so you haven,t got a hd tv so how come you can tell the original poster that
lg are cheap rubbish, that poor guy is all confused now.
Personally to an average tv user you are not going to tell the differnce between any new hd tv i think all companys models are great nowadays.

Because I repair them and install them, so I see a LOT of HDTV's, and deal with many different manufacturers - most of whom's service facilities leave much to de desired!.

As for the difference between models, the differences are HUGE - don't buy an LCD or Plasma without seeing it side by side with other makes and models, expense ones (usually!) completely 'wipe the floor' with the cheap ones.

But it's not just a question of performance, it's reliability and service as well - some companies have a good reputation, many don't!.

They make cheap products that work reasonably well. Whereas people like Panasonic/Sony/Pioneer make products that work really well at sensible prices for the technology involved. They also have reasonable service/returns procedures to back them up in case of problems.

Sony are still the market leader, and have probably the best service in the UK?.

If you have problems, and aren't happy with the outcome, I fully agree with your decision to never buy from that manufacturer again - I'd do the same myself (and I can hold a grudge for years!).

BTW, what DVDR do you have?, and what's the problem?.

You wouldn't happen to be a Sony engineer ?
