Great timing that the weekend of Five's tenth birthday there's a big Home and Away storyline in the form of last years series finale.

I remember when five took over Home and Away in 99 (I think?!?) and they were around a year and a half behind - seemed like ages before we'd eventually catch up, but we're getting there.

Happy Birthday Five!

It is a great coincidence that it the season finale forms on Five's 10th anniversary and Five are going all out to promote it-adverts for Home and Away on FIVE!!

From next week we will be only 10 weeks behind. This week we are 16 weeks behind. I assume next year a break will be neccesary, or the year after.

To be precise it's 11 weeks (55 episodes). I think Five might put Home and Away on a summer "Hiatus" this year (the 6 week school holidays = mid-July to end August) and keep the 11 week "comfort" zone.

I doubt that they will do that. They can save five a year by getting rid of Bank Holidays and Good Friday
Good Fri
Easter Mon
May Day
Spring Bank
Summer Bank

Three more can go
Xmas Day
Boxing Day
New Years Day

And they can lose a few Friday eps in July and August as Fri is the lowest rating day usually.

Seventeen there saved just by those suggestions.

...or get up to a week behind, then take the break over Christmas, same as Australia.

Seems silly taking a break mid-season.

I'd rather they cut one episode a week than cut 6 or so weeks at once...i won't be able to cope without my home and away!! And hopefully it's Monday because that's when i can't see it lol

In most other soaps Friday is the lowest rated day, but in Home and Away it can sometimes be the highest!

Well tonight we have to delightful new theme to look forward to . The theme is actually ok but the vocalist is terrible. The titles are fab though.

I think five (though not five life, obviously) would like to keep the Oz sequences (ie. whole weeks) because of the Friday "suspense".
If they run through the next 46 weeks without a break it will take them through to Feb 15th next year. They can then keep the Oz season finale cliffhanger. If they took a 6-week break (as in Oz) they would be able to start again on the Monday following Easter Monday (31st March). However, I am not sure they would like to break in February as the middle of winter is peak time for TV watching and viewers would defect to other channels.
I think I prefer my July 23-August 31 (ie our school summer holidays) theory when people watch less TV as a whole and channel loyalty would return on September 3 with the new school year - after all H & A is mainly aimed at the 15-25 age range (school / uni students).
That would mean the Oz episode of 4th May would be the beginning of our summer break. Perhaps the episode may be a mini-cliffhanger???

Whatever happens we're going to face a 6 week break soon enough! I won't be able to stand waiting for the new season for 6 weeks!!

But they never had a long break when it was on ITV, they just took it off as another poster suggests, banks holidays etc.

I think it's stupid that FIVE put it on Christmas Day and Boxing Day last year, because it rated well under 1 million viewers.
