Recommendation for a new DVD Recorder
lloydi
31-03-2007
Righto, I'm after a new DVD recorder and would like one that:

* Can be set to multi region (hacked, or whatever)
* Remembers when you press stop or power off where it was in the disk so you don't have to start from scratch each time

I actually don't have any other major requirements other than those, so if you have other suggestions I'd be glad to hear them. For what it's worth, this will be linked to a Sky + box and a 42" Plasma TV.

I don't want to spend a fortune - can we get a decent one for around the £200 mark?

I'll be in London tomorrow and might make a bee-line for Tottenham Court Road if I have a few suggestions on here in time

Thanks for any help you can provide - just wanna avoid getting a turkey!

Hi,

I would recommend either Panasonic or Pioneer perhaps with an HDMI socket to connect to your Plasma.
Empire Direct offer some Panasonic recorders that have been "unlocked" to be multi region. As for resuming playback on DVD's every DVD player I have ever used does this, but I have only ever used 5 or 6 different units.

I have just bought a Panasonic DVD/VHS combi with Taiyo Yuden TYG03 discs which has been very reliable after 3 weeks use.

Hope this helps.
Good luck.

I agree with the above - a nice Panasonic but make sure it has RGB input on its scart socket (not the 15 then I think). Sticking with good quality disks is a good idea - Panasonics own brand was/is made by Taiyo Yuden so they should be a good choice.

That Denon is not a recorder (I have one). I am currently using a Philips for recording, but it is becoming unreliable so I will probably have to replace it so I checked out this topic to see what people recommend.

Hi,

Here's some more info for you.

Link to Panasonic DVD recorders:-
http://www.panasonic.co.uk/dvd-recorders/index.htm

As you will see on the website they have some new models available from April - I don't know if you're able to wait a bit longer.

It looks like the 2 DMR-EZ27-x series models will be in the £200 ball park, on the Panasonic website they start with the cheapest at the bottom of the page (I think) with the top-of-the-range models being, naturally, at the top of the page.

I haven't been able to track down any more info except that on the Panasonic website for the new models, with just price information available from dabs.com.

Sorry, but I haven't been able to track down any info about buying them in multi-region form.

How do you connect your plasma screen to your boxes - both of these recorders have an HDMI connection available.

They also support Full HD 1080p Up-Conversion and have a built-in Freeview tuner, which you might not be needing as you have Sky, but the Full HD 1080p support might be useful.

If you decide to buy a Panasonic recorder, I think the Taiyo Yuden Panasonic-branded -R discs using their TYG03 die are recommendable.

With regards to automatically resuming playback of a disc from where it was last viewed and stopped, I have a feeling that this might not work if the machine has been in standby or switched off at the mains as it could forget if it has been in standby - however, I think it should automatically resume playback if stop has just been pressed and the disc left in the player/recorder. If you switch off the unit, or eject/change the disc then it will probably forget the disc position. FYI with my players, if you press stop once, it remembers the disc position, but if you press stop twice, it returns to the start of the disc.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Steve.

Is there one with a USB?

I would like to jump in on this thread, as my 2 year old Goodmans DVD Recorder (the one with inbuilt freeview) has just stopped working. And this time its not just some sort of freeze or crash (which it did a lot of). Its got no power, no display, no response from any buttons either on the remote or on the machine, and no noise from the electrics inside. Changed the fuse over and still no power.

Keeping in mind I already have a Thomson dual-tuner pvr (hard disc) for Freeview recording, what sort of thing should I look at for replacing the Goodmans (please dont say another Goodmans). If the price is not too much higher, a DVD recorder with hard disc as well as Freeview would appear a nice idea. An HDMI socket for future use with a later tv might also be a wise idea too. Can anyone let me know if such machines record the widescreen auto switching signals - like my thomson pvr does, or would that function be limited to hard disc recordings and not work on dvd recordings (as per the Goodmans dvd recorder).
