Martha barely knew this mad stranger, but now he was all she had. He had shown her the wonders and dangers of the universe, but none had prepared her for the shock of seeing her immediate dysfunctional family completely wiped from all of time, never to return by cloning or any other means, or even to be seen or remembered in flashback. The Tardis, sensing their shared grief, piped some gentle tootly music into the console room.
Suddenly, the Doctor stiffened in her embrace and pulled away. He grasped her by the shoulders, and stared wildly into the middle-distance. "Unless..." Martha's heart leapt. Was this another of the moments when he turned his attention coldly away, bouncing away from her doting gaze onto some madcap plan to return to Earth, possibly a major British city, at some particular point in history or the future?
"No! Yes...hold on! Wait a minute! Yes, that's it!" Brimming with excitement, the Doctor bounded across to the console. "Miss Jones, I've got an idea that just might - if it works, and I'm lucky, very very lucky, because I am the kind of time lord who is a man that is lucky - then I might just be able to bring them back!"
