we just got our new Hitachi 42PD8700 plasma tv delivered but we're really struggling to set it up & the manual is worse than useless. At the moment we have a picture but have lots of flickering red and green lines running horizonally from the left hand side of the screen and can't get rid of them.we're at our wits end and about to put in back in the box and return it.So disappointed with it especially for the money

also just to add that there seems to be no blue colour on the screen at all, anything that should be blue seems to be glowing a lurid green like a bad seventies style pop video, any suggestions please?

Sounds like it's faulty?, Hitachi don't have a very good reputation, and haven't for many years.

Hitachi don't tend to make much anymore, this and the 8600 series are merely branded Vestel sets (IE the same as most Goodmans, Bush and Alba kind if stuff).

If you're after a true Hitachi check the 42PD9700 in Comet at £999, it has a motorised swivel stand, 1080 resolution (not 1080p, only 1080i) and is a TRUE Hitachi.

Well worth the extra pocket money.

I picked up one of these 9700s about a month ago and I have to say I'm very pleased, especially for the money. Good picture on both standard and HD (Although I haven't got a Sky HD or HDDVD player yet, I have hooked up my PC via HDMI to DVI lead). Plenty of connection options, and the remote controlled motorised base has great novelty value!

As for your actual problem, my first thought is a dodgy AV connection. Does this happen on all channels? ie. Via terrestrial channels 1-5 as well as from external sources like DVD player etc?

If it's only from external sources I would try plugging the connector into a different socket or try a different lead. Sounds like the RGB signals aren't coming through properly to me.

thanks for the replies,

it didn't matter whether dvd or,satellite or cctv cams were plugged in or not, it was the same problem, the red & green lines were shooting across the screen with white bars also popping in intermittently(sp?) the picture behind all this was saturated with a lurid green colour, anything that should have been blue, black, silver or grey was green, it was really odd.We didn't connect the aerial for terrestial TV as it's so rubbish here we've not bothered with it for years,we've just been watching sky. Anyway have rang argos who have agreed to exchange it, but if this is no better we will get a refund instead. So it is now back in the box awaiting collection and we are still watching a tiny portable and prob won't get this sorted out til afer Easter now. Thanks everyone for your kind help and suggestions

I'm very surprised by this cos hitachi have always been ok for us maybe we've just been very lucky with them. Our previous TV was a 34" goodmans and lasted us for 9 years and the one before that was hitachi too.I've got a hitachi VCR which I've had for 11 years too may check that other tv out at comet if this doesn't work out for us,thanks for the tips

Why get an exchange for what's essentially a very overpriced Goodmans?

The 9700 is a TRUE Hitachi TV, and has all the extra features to show. Well worth the extra £50!

It's like anything else, you're only looking at a very tiny sample, in the trade we deal with much larger numbers.

Hitachi made their name way back in the 70's, by producing some VERY reliable sets - they have gone rapidly downhill since then, and we stopped selling Hitachi years back because of the poor quality badged sets they were selling, and the deterioration in the quality of their service.

In fact, back then, it was seriously considered in the trade that Hitachi were going to pull out of the UK all together, but in the event it was actually Mitsubishi that did so.

it was cheaper than that when we bought it,they put the price up £100 after we'd ordered which makes a change, usually the other way round. We weren't planning on spending that much on it anyway so it would be a real stretch adding another £150 on top
