What do you think Alan Sugar wants from an apprentice?

Is it a good salesman, business manager, project manager, team leader? Sometimes it seems to change.

Do the candidates know what job they will be doing if they win?

As I have said in another thread an apprentice is a person who works for another in order to learn .

I think that this is key. If Alan Sugar is really looking for a true apprentice it will be about inherent talent, potential to develop longer term etc. etc. either down a specific route or more likely across a broad spectrum of roles. Not someone who has necessarily performed the 'best' in a few tasks & is seen as being good at a 'specific' skill. I'm not sure this is made really clear in the programme.

See, I think he goes through most of the series thinking that, firing people because of it, and then at the end of the show, he realises that he needs someone more competant, but by then the best choices are long gone.

I think Alan Sugar understands but last year he had a poor bunch as he said. I know Ruth had a huge fan base on here last year but I can appreciate why she wasn't seen as fitting 'an apprentice' role. My comment relates to what I perceive as a lack of understanding by viewers which for me is apparent reading some of the posts on this site. A little more clarity around what an apprentice is 'upfront' might help.

During the last two years the performances of the two winners were hardly shown during the series. I had hardly noticed Tim or Michele while the series was running. They suddenly became noticeable at the last minute. I think he wants someone that he can control and has a strong work ethic. He doesn't want someone like Ruth or Sarah (from series 1) because they are too opinionated.

I would see it as someone who is open-minded & willing to learn.
