TV on Centre Speaker

I am thinking of purchasing a Q Acoustics Centre speaker but don't have enough room on the front of the TV stand, do you thing I can stand the TV on top of it? The speaker is nearly 8 inches deep so needs a lot of room in front of the TV.

If not has anyone seen a plinth I can stand the telly on that will give me room underneath for the centre speaker.

It would probably be best to put the TV on a plinth with the centre speaker under it, save damaging the speaker at the least.

I haven't seen any plinths specifically for TV's, but I reckon you should be able to make one fairly easily - nice dresssed wood frame with a bit of veneered plywood for the top?

Another alternative, if the TV cabinet will accommodate it, would be to place the speaker on top of the TV.

There are specialist vibration pads out there that you could place underneath. You can even arrange them in such a way it will allow you to angle the speaker downwards towards the listener/soundstage if placement is too high, or allow the speaker to lay flat if not.

The speaker should not be put on top of the TV unless it is magnetically shielded to avoid purity issues.

In this case the speaker is magnetically shielded.

But you are correct in what you say. This also applies for any speaker (L/R) that will be in close proximity to the TV, not just the centre speaker.

Don't forget, this only applies to CRT sets, LCD and Plasma are not affected by magnetic fields in this way (no shadow mask, and no magnetically deflected electron beam).

An AV Stand would solve this problem. I sat my 32" JVC CRT on this Elite AV Stand with a B&W centre speaker on the second shelf and the sound was fine.

If you're interested it's for sale.

Cheers,
Ray.

I already have a stand but it is full of HD Box and DVD player and Audio gear, so I have nowhere left for the centre speaker.

I have a 40" Sony so it takes up a lot of space on the top, I just need a sub plinth to stand the TV on.

Ah right. I wasn't sure what you had. I use a hi-fi stand for the amp etc. and have a plasma and centre speaker wall-mounted. All this kit in modern lounges is a pain isn't it? I hope you come up with a solution.

Cheers.
