What Is A Real HD Screen?

My mate has just got a new PS3 and is looking at getting an HD screen to play games on.

As my profile says, I have a Sony Vaio HD model with blu-ray and 17'' screen. The screen is lovely, but I don't consider it to be the real HD experience.

I would argue that it's better to watch Casino Royale on DVD on a standard 28'' screen for £11 than pay £25 to watch it on a 17'' HD screen on blu-ray.

He wants to get a portable HD screen, but I can't see the point. For me real HD starts at 32''.

What do others think?

Partly it will depend how close you sit to it, but provided the 28" is a good performer I'd probably agree with you.

As was ever the case with technology (TV, 'hifi', cars) what the specs say and how something looks/sounds/performs in reality can be distant cousins rather than siblings. We looked at a big Sony 1080 pixel high LCD TV, but ended up with a Panasonic 768h plasma because it seems better to us.

It depends completely on how far you sit from the screen. A 17" from 3' is equivalent to a 45" from 8' or a 68" from 12'.

True. Never thought of it that way.
