So since this new legislation comes in later this year, do you think it will be mentioned in the soaps? After all, they will not be allowed to smoke in the pub etc. any more.

Then I realised, will anybody be able to smoke in the "privacy of their own home?" After all, this would still happen in real life, but will they be able to film it as it is a closed set? Will they even be allowed to film characters smoking outside, as technically they are still in a workplace?

I just think a bit part of realism will be taken away from soaps if this happens.

Check out "River City".

Indoor sets will be affected. I think the only difference from Scotland is that it will be allowed on stage (strange since that is indoors). Outdoor sets I'm not sure of.

The next "Big Brother" will be no-smoking indoors as the local council ruled it was a place of work, with the housemates as well as staff being paid employees.

Can't see it affecting present day dramas as much as period ones. Some soap characters will no doubt be seen to give up and they wouldn't be able to smoke in indoor places other than their character's home.

Maybe they'll film all the smoking outside (Deirdre ).
Stupid law anyway. Why doesn't it apply in the House of Commons? Isn't that a workplace?

Oh maybe not.
I agree though, people will still smoke in their homes so it should be shown, after all they show other things that you're not allowed to do in the street or at work

Yolande mentioned it last night in EE as she told Dot to stop smoking in the laundrette before the ban comes in.

Yolande and Dot were discussing this in EastEnders last night. Yolande wants Dot to stop smoking in the laundrette due to the new legistation.

EDIT: Beat me to it Zoe!

The chamber was one of the first places to impose a ban ... centuries ago.

They'll still be allowed to smoke in their 'green rooms' and bars though.

Characters homes are part of the work place.

There was a lot of smoking in EE and Corrie this week so maybe they are maximising the habit now to give a no smoking storyline more impact later. I think it looks disgusting and wish they didn't have characters do it, it wouldn't be missed.

Sorry, I meant in real life (that's the only contradiction).

Its just making the soaps even more unrealstic, because I am sure with this everyone will give up smoking

What next

Ban alcohol being drunk
Ban any junk food being sold/eaten in soaps

They haven't in "River City" as I recall. Just a bigger ratio of outdoor scenes.

(I think you can have an unlit one on the go).

Never seen River City, so dont really know much about it

If we look at EE though, the whole of Albert Square is a work place, so even though its outside, smoking will be banned

If this is the case I find it unrealistic

If it was real life, when the ban comes in, if Dot wants a fag she will have to stand outside the launderette, will this happen?
What about inside her own home

No - see the "Big Brother 8" decision that Hertfordshire council (same studio) made. They ruled the whole place a workplace but smoking is still to be allowed in the garden.

Fair enough then, Ignore what I said

If soaps stick to how it would be in real life I have no problem

Well there's still the "indoors at a characters' house problem", which is where there is a difference.

I'm sure they're all aware of this though and no doubt have a workaround.

For starters I'm sure there is a visual effect they used on "Early Doors" and "The Smoking Room" (poss also "Life On Mars") to create a grey fog 'in' the room that doesn't actually exist. That in combo with an unlit cigarette might suspend disbelief.

Dot should be having her smokes outside anyway, inconsiderate old kipper. If I used a service wash at a laundrette and my washing came back stinking of cigarette smoke because some fag ash Lil had been folding my sheets I'd be complaining to the management. Smoking hasn't been allowed at my local laundrette for ages - quite right too.

I am confused on the Big Brother 8 Ruling.

I work in the pub/restaurant/hotel industry & have researched the details of the smoking ban.

At a hotel (and in prisons) you as the customer are living at the site & so as it is your "home" ,albeit temporarily, you have the right to smoke if the owner allows you to.

I thought it would be the same with Big Brother, its' their home for the duration, there for it is Endomols decision if they are going ot allow the HM's to smoke in the home they are providing for them.

But they are being paid by an employer (Endemol) to be there, just like the other staff.

With prison no-one directly pays (except the taxpayer) and in a hotel you pay the hotel.

I agree , they dont stick to being 100% real

But if you are watching EE one day, then the next day (after the ban comes in), everyone stops smoking altogether, it looks stupid

Would Dot really give up smoking in a matter of days

I don't think it will be done like that. Ironically though places like the Queen Vic will have to observe a ban that's not 'really' in place for several weeks before 1 July.

I love the selferightous messages that you keep slipping onto your posts junglejuice.

I'm sure you must be one of these poor soles who has been stranded in your homes, wishing you could go to the pub, but are terrified of the chance of getting some ciggaret smoke near you.

I'm sure you'll all be rushing out to the pubs & restaurants in droves once the ban comes in .............oh no hang on that's not whats happened in Scotland or Ireland, infact it's having a dire affect on the industry, but hay-ho, just think of the future........ my children won't even get to find out what a rural pub was like, becasue they will all have gone bust & been turned into houses, just like what's happened in Ireland & is happening in Scotland.

Yippee for nanny & three cheers for progress!?!

Why would it look stupid? Smoking looks stupid! Few characters smoke anyway so it would be believable for them to do a quit together. Alternately, those few characters could just not smoke, no 'I've packed up' announcement, no song and dance, the viewer would soon get used to a smokefree soap.
