Contract from Phones4U
Rich Grant
04-04-2007
Hey all. I have been on o2's pay as you go service for the whole time I have had a mobile phone and recently I decided to see if I could get a contract phone instead.

So, I found the phone and wanted and the tarrif (T-Mobile) and decided to order it from Phones4U. I did this on Monday afternoon. I received an email saying that they had received my order but I've not heard any thing since then.

The email said that the delivery would be the next working day but I didn't receive anything yesterday and nothing has arrived today yet.

The problem is that I don't know if I passed the credit check or not. If you fail the credit check, do Phones4U tell you or do they just cancel your order without saying anything?

How long should I expect to wait?

Thanks

Were you not given a login or anything so that you can login to their website to see the progress of the order?

No, there doesn't seem to be any where on their site for you to log in to.

All I can advise is that you call them on 0800 0725 855 and ask them. That is the number for online orders, so that should be the right department.

thanks for the number, i gave them a call and they say that they are waiting on t-mobile to make a decision on whether to give me the contract or not. How long does this process normally take?

Saying that its T-Mobile is a bit of a cop out, they would process your application on a web-reg system almost immediately after you hit the submit button and provide P4U with a decision, perhaps P4U are having problems with the stock of your handset, or merely a back log of online orders?

I'm not too sure what the problem was but I called them back and they said that I failed the credit check so they said I should try a different network as Tmobile are quite hard to get on to. So I tried vodafone. I asked the lady how I'll find out if I've failed the check or not since the last time I had too call them to find out why I hadn't received my phone. She said if there were any problems she'd call me. Anyway, it got to 4pm today and I hadn't heard but I though just to be sure I'd call them up to see if I passed vodafone's credit check or not, I did tho I wish I had gone with o2 instead. ah well.

Does anyone here know what networks are notoriously hard/easy to get a contract for?

Providing you get direct (telesales/websales) then you have 14days DSR policy.

If you get in TMobile Retail store providing you get streetcheck you have 14days also.

Any other dealer is at their descretion.

I whole heartedly agree with your assessment. On the plus side you can haggle an expensive phone down to free if you stand your ground and be prepared to walk out the store without being intimidated by the sales person and manager.

What kills me is when the sales person says they have to go and talk to the manager, then go through to the back of the shop, probably standing there taking the p*ss out of the customers or having a coffee and come back to tell you they beat the manager down and he is not happy! C'mon who are you kidding.

Couple of tips: make sure before you leave the shop you have exact details of what you signed up to, they may add extras you don't know about e.g. text bundles, signing a direct debit for insurance (cancel this by letter, you only get grief from the call centre, the will phone you on your new phone though).

Other than that, weigh up the advantages and disadvantages then decide if it is worth it.

Well, I ordered the phone last Monday (2nd April), it's now the 11th April and I still don't have my new phone

I initially tried to get a contract with T-Mobile but after 2 days of waiting for my phone to be delivered I phoned up Phones4U to ask how long it would take and they told me I had failed the credit check so I decided to try with Vodafone. The lady said that if I pass the credit check I should receive the phone by Saturday (8th April) but nothing came.

I knew that nothing would arrive on Monday because of the Easter holidays so I was thinking it would definately arrive on Tuesday. (Remember, on their website it says that they guarantee next day delivery). Nothing came. So I called them up to ask if I passed vodafone's credit check and they said I passed on the Friday (7th April).

I'm still waiting for the phone to be delivered, if it doesn't come today I won't be best pleased. Problem is, I don't know if this is Phones4U's fault (i.e. they didn't send the phone when they say they did) or just that it was the Easter weekend.

Its probably the unreliable Royal Mail post has been going missing in the post for us recently and they have put up their prices yet again.

They should think about putting their prices down not up until they can offer a reliable service.

Ideally avoid phones4u in the first place. If anything goes wrong with that handset, they are not the ones you want to have to come back to. My partner and my aunt' s boyfriend have both had problems in this respect. If you must go with them, be sure to cancel their insurance, it's a complete rip-off.

I went into a phones4u store yesterday and i felt as though the sales staff were gonna jump me and hump my leg!!! walked in and one of their staff pounced on us to see if they could help, even though we hadn't even looked at the handsets/contracts offered. We were then passed off onto some girl who looked barely out of school who then proceeded to ask whether we were paying by cash or card, AGAIN WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT THE HANDSETS AVAILABLE!!!!!

That was the first and last time I will ever go into Phones4U!
