Yes and he wanted to get rid of Ian, Barbara and Tegan as soon as possible but ended up everywhere but modern Earth.

He did? I read quite the opposite into it. He seemed (as a character) to be attempting to convince himself as that it was "just one trip" as much as Martha/the audience. The verbal equivalent of "I'll just have just one last cigarette" before completely failing to quit, or "I'm giving up on women" after a bad break-up. In his case, it seems equivalent to both analogies.

True and I am sure the same will happen with Martha. At least we are away from modern Earth and her dreadful family

Really. I suppose I was just hoping. Maybe the Master will cull them at the end or something.

I could do with some little dollies to experiment on. Will get on the blower to The Master and see what he can do

Unfortunately ( or not, depending on your point of view ) there is supposed to be a lot more 'family involvement' to come so I do think the 'one trip' will end up being slightly more than one rather than being a longer trip which never quite manages to get back home

Why not all of them??? Jackie and Mickey worked quite well when they travelled in the Tardis but they were just two extra characters and were allowed to develop. I the end I preferred Mickey or Jackie with the Doctor rather than Rose This time we have a huge family with more hangups than either Jackie , Mickey or Rose.

and as far as I could see, we didn't see much of them anyway in the first episode, so I could not say whether they were dreadful or not (taken in the context of it being the series opener, and setting the background for Martha's introduction).

Now THAT would be something, what a great out of the blue finale, then the Dr would have to take Martha with him.

Im holding out judgement on the new family, took a few episodes to get used to the Tylers but I enjoyed them in the end, and appreciated them more looking back at the earlier episodes. It was right to write them out when Rose left though.

unless she decided enough was enough...having one's family executed because of a long running feud between The Doctor and The Master might push Martha over the edge

Just a thought but what if Martha blamed the Doc for her family's execution and turned against him - that way she could become a recurring enemy in Series 4 which the Doctor really doesn't want to harm because of his guilt and he still deep down thinks of her as a companion.

Keeping up the Buffy comparisons we know RTD likes, she could almost become an Angel/Angelus type character - obviously not as a vampire and maybe not quite as close a relationship though

or Martha might be turned to the dark side by The Master who uses his good looks and charm to sway her..especially if she realises that she is never going to get anywhere with The Doctor.

I think the series could do with ending on a real cliffhanger for a change rather than with a regeneration or someone else popping up inside the TARDIS.

The kind of will they, won't they survive type of scenario that involves a number of characters so they can dispense with their services should they decide not to renew their contracts.

The 'mass cull' is the only thing that would justify having so many family members. However I like the idea of seeing who lives and who dies. How about Martha dies. The Doctor blames himself as he did with Adric. The mother blames the Doctor and agrees to help the Master bring about his destruction. Just an idea...

Saw in another thread about 'Old Who vs New Who' and thought you might like this... Maybe others have spotted similar 'old series references'?

Having just watched McCoy's Cyberman story Silver Nemesis I've noticed at least 2 similarities between that episode and recent new episode The Shakespeare Code:

1) In SN
Ace urges The Doctor to hide from an approaching lady (the Queen) inside the grounds of Windsor Castle, to which the Doctor replies 'don't worry, just act like you own the place'

Exactly the same line is used in TSC when Martha is worried about being black in 1599

2) In SN
Lady fancypants fires an arrow at the Doctor, which embeds itself into the exterior TARDIS door

Exactly the same thing happens at the end of TSC. Has that happened in other old Who episodes?

Also both stories are historical episodes featuring cameos from Queens... Spooky.
