They told us both of them couldn't do it. With Maria they actually had several capable winners and some interesting contestants who were obviously not Maria. In the end they wanted the one who was most familiar (Andrewsesque) to the potential audience. Thats who they got -though they claimed to want something else and something different from the characterisation Connie brings to the role.
This time they seem to me to be spinning it the opposite way. Its very close and even is the claim - but its very close and even because no one is really that much better or more appropriate than anyone else. The top and bottom of the range are not far from the centre wheras in Maria the top end was more numerous and able and the inappropriate (too young, too Romanian...) end was more obvious.
I suspect it will work out the same way - the most experienced singer who will look most mainstream in the role will win.”
I agree with much of what you say. In HDSPLM their were realisitcally 4 people who could easily play the part of Maria, those being Connie, Helena, Aoife and Abi. Because although. all the final 10 (with the exception of Simona) could sing the SOM songs easily, (Doe a Dear is hardly the greatest challenge is it?). The part isn't primarily about singing, despite ALW's protests that the greatest singer ever had to be found (which was Siobahn apparently- I mean- thats the only possible reason why he favoured her over Aoife when Aoife was obviously the superior actress and ready for the job right?). Anyway those four were the only one with the experience and acting abilities to handle the role.
Helena had the strongest vocal ability , but wasn't as suitable for Maria as the other 3 (IMO), it would have been interesting to . Aoife would have acted the part superbly and had a nice voice (nothing really special though). Abi would have been something different, perhaps a risk because her voice is quite 'earthy' and rich, and maybe not what you'd expect from a maria but 'climb a tree and scrape a knee' discribed her pefectly. Connie was just a generic, Julie Andrew type (at least thats what I felt at the time). She's done very well with the role, but my point is the show would have been no less of a sucess if one of the other three had replaced her.
The difference this year is not that theres no stand out winner (because in reality their wasn't a stand out winner last year either) but that more of the Josephs are capable of the role. Partly because there is no straight acting in Joseph, so theres not so much need to eliminate people who have fantastic voices because of their limited acting ability (like leanne, Siohbon and Belinda in Maria). Also because Jpseph isn't quite as iconic as SOM.
Basically the format of the show (i.e concentrating more on singing) favours finding a Joseph over finding a Maria.
