In classic Who episodes it has been widely established that there are male and female time lords and several female time lords have appeared (eg The Rani). One even was a companion to the doctor for a time. These have been seen regenerating always as females.
So the precedent seems set. Moreover, RTD answered this very question once making clear it will not happen with him in charge. I think his quote was that he would not like to be the one explaining to the kids what happened to the doctor's ***** !! |

It happened in the 'Unbound' audio adventure Exile.
A Time Lord can change gender if they take their own life, or something like that. |

meh. I think a lot of people would be extraordinarily hostile towards the idea of a female doctor

It wont work........
Remember how you felt the first time you saw a female bus driver? Some things are best left alone! |

Maureen Lipman has already publicly expressed a desire to be the next doctor. I think it could work although we are becoming more used to more action scenes.( wouldn't have happened in Hartnell's days
)

The Doctor should be male. It wouldn't work with a woman in the role, and that's that. I am a woman btw, so I'm not being sexist. Or maybe I am but I don't care, I wouldn't watch a female Doctor

i don't think the Doctor should be Female. Theoretically if you regenerate and you regenerate every single cell in the body then it is possible to change gender but i think that would take a very strong guy to do that and i think it would be much easier for the regenerating time lord to regenerate into the same gender but if he has to create new cells and differentiate them then it is possible to regenerate into the opposite gender.
However, this isn't scientifically sound program and seeing as it has been hinted that guys turn into guys and girls into girls then that is what they should stick to and i personally think the show wouldn't work if he regenerated into a different gender. If it was the second or third incarnation and survived it would be ok but not when the character has been established for 10 incarnations as a guy. They were my two cents on the subject. |

So, a Timelord has gender. As has already been shown in countless episodes of the show, a female Timelord always regenerates as another female Timelord and a male Timelord always regenerates as another male Timelord.
Except, of course, when viewer boredom, political correctness gone mad and a ratings crisis meet and suddenly a female Doctor becomes a very real possibility. Oh dear. |

I don't think the Doctor should be female, although if he were, it would have to be Tracy-Ann Oberman. I can't imagine many actresses who could carry the role, especially after ten men.
But still, enough of that. Never! |

I have already said to my friends that I would love to see a female doctor.
They have already established a parallel universe where Rose is living now. The Doctor is the last living time lord in this universe and he's established that the TARDIS can travel time and space but can only project images into that other dimention. The only way you can travel into that world is through a temperal rift. Therefore there's always a possibility that there can be a female Timelord existing in another dimention. That could be explained and would make a good next series. You could even do a Star Trek Generations thing where the new and the old timelords meet through a wormhole into each others dimentions and one of them dies while trying to save the other. This could be a good chage over from one doctor to another rather than the standard regeneration, and would justify having a female doctor. |
