It could easily work but it could be a disaster for any actress who takes the role as the level of scrutiny would probably be considerable.
I dunno, I reckon a female Doctor could work if she was naturally both authoritative and witty...

There already was. Series wise Romana remained behind in E-Space, so they could have used that quite easily however RTD has said that that she was President of the Time Lords during the Time War, so it's expected that he killed her off as well the cad.
The canonicity of this (given that it was in the 2006 annual), is unclear however, so he could always change his mind.
I have to say, if there is to be a female in the role, I'd rather it was as Romana than the Doctor, maybe killing him off at the end of his regenerations, and having Romana replace him.
Personally the only way I think we'll see a female doctor however, is if Billy takes on the role. And the love sick doc regenerates into her image.

I think that if The Doctor was played by a woman it would bring a bit of gender confusion to the character, youve seen the male doctor get close to women, what would the doctor do if he turned into a she?
I couldn't think of a quicker way to kill the show stone dead, even the hardcore Whovians who wouldn't let the show die and whom RTD admits he takes for granted would switch off.

Apparently, it has been said in previous Dr Who's, that the Dr can only regenerate 13 times.
And then you get that silly Christopher Eccleston, who decides to waste his opportunity, and only play him for one series. Thing is though, he said he didn't want to be typecast, but I'll always think of him as Dr Who now.

I can't beleive that this thread and debate is still going. I will add my voice to this (although I still think this is the wrong time to do this at the beginning of a new season - oh well). There is no reason why you can't have a female Doctor. You could mess up everything and it would not be as good but you could do it. However by the same reason we could make Miss Marple a man Mr Marple, Superman becomes a woman, as does Spiderman and Batman. Wonderwoman becomes Wonderman

My point is, of course, we can change the sex of long established characters but at the cost of the beleivability of the character in question. Doctor Who is you might think easier to get away with because he (she) can regenerate but it has been quite clearly established that he is a male Time Lord and there are (or were) female Time Lords. You could add new elements to the story to explain changes of sex of course but this would leave so many unresolved issues and be far to complex to explain in a family show that none or very few could ever be resolved. Time Lords mating habits for example. Shudder at the thought.
There is of course a middle way. How about a TV series or comic strip about a female Time Lady - Romana for example. They did it for Superwoman, Batgirl etc. Just a thought.

Sorry Slug. I didn't want to tread over old ground but this whole "Doctor should be a woman" debate has been going on since at least Tom Baker left and maybe even before. For a start it seems the wrong time to have it at the beginning of a new season and we know we have David with us for at least another 2 years. So why discuss this now?? I wasn't going to post on here but some of the posts here seemed a bit silly and lack any real arguement. So I ranted but hope some took notice. Thanks for you back up. It's nice to know that there are some who think the same way I do.
At the end of the day we have all grown up knowing that despite all the regenerations the Doctor is always actualy the same person under everything, that that person is male. There may be precedent to allow this to happen as far as the Who universe is concerned but changes need to take the fans with them and I just don't think the fans would believe a female Doctor.
Lets have as many female timelords as you like but not the Doctor himself.

Quite agree. The Rani was great for example and gave the Master a good run for his money.

Oh no the dreadful Time and the Rani with Bonnie Langford Sylvester McCoy at their worst. Don't get me started on that era. The Rani was served best in her first appearance in Mark of The Rani which also starred the Master. There was a lot more to do with the character but she was let down big time by storylines.
