Doctor Who - Review of 'Gridlock'

Or reviews if anybody finds any others before now and this Saturday.

http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/mpapps/pag...00/6539021.stm

Quote:
“After the first two episodes introducing The Doctor's new companion, this is the story where both the series and Martha really start to come into their own.”

The reviewer feels that this episode is better than the previous two. 'Highlight of the series so far' apparently.

'Trust' is a strong theme.

The Doctor is told a secret which will overshadow the rest of the series. It's the four words long thing.

Now this I think some people will like, and I think I'll put this bit in spoiler tags....
Spoiler
...This story sees the introduction of not one being from The Doctor's past...but 'more than one creature from The Doctor's past'....This could be the one where the hotly tipped 'Macra' appear.

It's only one review so far, and it's from a BBC site,....but so far so good. From the review things look quite promising. And there's also the fact that this is supposed to be the most effects laden episode since the relaunch to add to the equation. So on the surface it looks like it has the ingredients to potentially be a very good episode.

Well we already know of more than one creature from the Doctor's past - the crap cats and FOB. Perhaps it should've said "more than two"?

Yes you're right come to think of it.

In the 'next time' trailer The Doctor is shown looking down a hatchway, presumably deep down in the depths of the city. Now didn't one of the cat ladies from New Earth fall down a very deep shaft?

But then there's the fact to consider that in the trailer The Doctor asks 'What are they?' and he already knows what the cat people look like and he knows what The Face of Boe looks like.
I think a cat person gives him a lift at the beginning of the episode as well.

If you get time to read the review it implies that it's something very different from the 'New Earth' regulars. Says something about Dads who watched the series 40 years ago to be jumping up and down with pleasure.

Also something else to ponder about which I mentioned in the previous main episode thread.....There's the two subjects from the famous painting 'American Gothic' by Grant Wood from 1930 in the episode.
Here's the painting ..... American Gothic.
They are seen very briefly in the series trailer shown after 'The Runaway Bride'.

For me this has to be the most intriguing episode of the series so far.
The fact that there was such a long delay in naming the story was interesting - almost as if RTD couldn't make his mind up.
Then the 'Next Time' trailer doesn't actually indicate any enemy until the "What the Hell are they?" line when The Doctor and friend are peering down a hatch.
And, of course, The Face Of Boe's message.
It's all very interesting. I'll be glued to the telly on Saturday (extra time on the fottball permitting...)

apologies AM. I am getting confused with another trailer I have seen....

there is another trailer I have seen on Freema's site which has a pussycat in it who looks like one of the cat nuns from New Earth.

http://freemaagyeman.com/news/

halfway through the trailer you will see pussycat with a gun...look familiar?

No need to apologise BG. I think you were right the first time.
Apparently the cat nurse (can't believe I'm saying that ) who looked after The Face of Boe, and who was led away by the police at the end of 'New Earth' is making a reappearance.
Novice Hame is her name.

And you just beat me to posting the new trailer by about 10 minutes.
Here's it's own page where you can go direct to the video.....
....The Gridlock Trailer Mashup

It's an excellent trailer too and shows how fantastic the 'Orbital' version of the Doctor Who theme can go together with edited Doctor Who action.

Oh, 'The Gridlock Trailer Mashup' also features the American Gothic couple as well.

Wonderful stuff. I highly recommend that people watch this trailer as I think you'll love it.

She was.

Oh and I almost forgot.....Full credit must go to TaraLivesOn who posts on the 'Outpost Gallifrey' forum for compiling such a great trailer together.

Sounds very promising

It's actually "the friend" who says it, though, so maybe it could be an enemy from the new series that he hasn't seen. I hope not, however!

Now obviously she is taking revenge on the guy who put her sisters in prison or wherever they are on New Earth.

What exactly was wrong with the cats? - I thought they were great and their prosthetics were top class - one of the more intriguing aliens in the new Who.

Sorry to post this here. It's probably the wrong place, but is it possible to read what's covered up in a spoiler if you want to and if so, how?

Highlight the greyed out bit by pressing your left mouse button down and scrolling over the text...

It is, just left click, hold and drag over the grey area.

Thank you both so much. That was becoming very frustrating.

Another marketing tie in this week then. The Cat people re-appear in the week that Survival is released on DVD. If you don't know, it was the last Sylvester Mcoy story of classic DW to be broadcast in 1989. It features a race of cat creatures and The Master.

Not a good story though. About on a par with New Earth, maybe thats what cat people do for the series. Survival is watchable but pretty poor, however the DVD is worth getting for the special features alone.

I hope so. The visuals look good and "the monster down below" has worked well for the series in the past but
1) The previous 2 Cat People stories New Earth and Survival weren't that good
2) RTD script. His stories have been getting better so there is hope on this point.
