Hail to the Thief - now available in the usual illicit downloading areas.

9 weeks before release, is this a record? In the future I predict albums will be leaked before they're even recorded.

Anyway, after 1 listen I'm impressed. Better than Amnesiac.

Better than Amnesiac? That's not saying much. I'll download it sometime in the week if I can. Is it more pretentious nonsense though? I'll probably find out after one song.

Watch out, bro...there's a Radiohead fanboy in this forum, and he'll be PISSED that you dissed his band.

Plus he's stalking me so he'll be here in a minute.

Hi, Simmy...great you could be here, mate. Made any more life-size models of me to put in your Radiohead room and light candles around? Assclown.

You don't like it, don't read it. I can't be arsed justifying myself to you, neither should i have to. I put forward my points as I see them, and if the way i do that pisses you off, so much the better. Poe-faced, humourless knowledge monkeys, jesus...I write what i write because i enjoy it. Mixing a few insults in with a bit of reasoned debate is great. Don't take yourself so seriously, big guy.

call me old fashioned, but give me pablo honey / the bends anyday over the (IMHO) obtusely inaccessable nonsense of the last two albums.

from an article in Q recently, it sounded like the new album is more back to the older kind of stuff ie with tunes.

hopefully it will be great, and hopefully they'll be great at Glastonbury (ordered tickets this morning so am very )

The first two songs are quite electronic, in the vein of Idioteque and Packt, but after that it gets more conventional.

Myxamatosis is the most "rock" they've ever been IMHO. There's something for those who like the Bends and also something for those who like them a bit more experimental (me).

Personally I think the Bends is one of their weakest efforts. HTTT is very good though.

Or is it perhaps you can't possibly be a 'proper' Radiohead fan if you admit to liking The Bends? What is the stigma attached to this band? I'm almost embarrassed to say I have their first 3 albums in case I get jumped on for just being into the commercial side of it, which is crap. I wonder how many people bought Kid A and claimed to like it in order to justify their existence as 'the biggest Radiohead fan in the world' but actually thought it was a pile of self-indulgent arty muso wanking.

I won't hold my breath on the new stuff but, like anything, if it sounds OK i'll have a listen. The trouble is, they've spent so long up their own arses they probably still stink.

I wonder who'll be a long soon....

i'll second that sentiment. about my fave radiohead track is *fake plastic trees* - its been hard to beleive its been the same band these last two albums. that in itself is no bad thing, but there surely has been an element of the music press fawning over them as True Genius, when, it seems to me just as likely that they did disappear up their self indulgant arses.

i just hope they've gotten it out of their system, and the new album will be something musical philistines such as myself can enjoy....

Absolutely. And those elements of the music press wouldn't happen to include Q magazine (which I wouldn't wipe my arse with if the Andrex ran out). No-one could accuse them of being just ever so slightly obsessed with Radiohead, now could they.
It's probably fair to say that if the next Radiohead album had been made up of curry-induced flatulence then the music press (or at least Q) would have proclaimed it groundbreaking and 'artistic' whilst the rest of us snoozed on:yawn:
A bit like a sheep in formaldehyde. Orgasmic to the lovey, dovey up the arse journos but pretentious wankfest to the population of the real world.

still, it makes a change from the tried and tested way of looking like a *true* fan :

*they're OK i suppose, but I much prefer the early stuff....*

And you will of course be required to prove this...otherwise your worthiness as 'normal' fan will be subject to scrutiny

I quite liked the cow/calf one I think it was called "Mother and child divided". I wouldn't have it in the house though

Does this make me Mr Wankfest, or can I claim an exemption?

As a fully certified (!) pedant, you are indeed exempt.

Um... not at all. I've been a huge RH fan since 1996. I love the Bends and OK Computer. Hell, those two albums are solely responsible for getting me interested in music.

But I'm able to see that there's more to music than bass/drums/guitar. I was listening to Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada way before Kid A came out. Does that make me pretentious?

Kid A is a brilliant album. I couldn't care less what the critics think. I like the music.

Oh, and for all the people who think they should just make the Bends II: what would you rather? They actually try something new and different, or end up making the same album over and over again like Oasis or Travis (who made one good album then bored the world to death)?

I have The Bends pegged as my favourite album of all time...OK Computer was of course the zenith of their achievements but, i dunno, the needless 'introspective', dark but ultimately meaningless and attention-seeking lyrics put it on a level below The Bends for me.

I too feel that Thom Yorke began to take himself a little too seriously after those with a sharp eye for an angle on The Bends pegged Black Star and Street Spirit as the breakout tracks rather than Trees or High & Dry. OK Computer was a musical tour de force but i tend even now to listen to it for the genius soundscape rather than the pretentious, meaningless lyrics.

I was looking forward to Kid A immensely, but it was to my love for the band what 13 was for me and Blur. A rock band should entertain and move you with their music, not try to baffle you into submission. To my mind, both these formerly great bands have disappeared far, far up their own arses. Hence both now produce music that, at least compared to their earlier work, sucks balls.

thats fair enough - and i said above that the fact that radiohead have evolved and tried different things is in itself no bad thing, and of course people will like it.

what has appeared to be the case with radiohead tho' is an almost unhealthy fawning of (sections of the) the music press over them, and the notion that people need to like them, and to not do so is to be a mere philistine in comparison to the all knowing music press.

or something. you know what i mean.

I agree with you about Travis and Oasis, and I'm all for bands trying new things... But if their experiments lead to something that is about a melodic as a domestic in a kitchen full of pots and pans, then what's the point?

You can be interesting, whilst still being melodic... OK Computer has some beautiful melodies, and interesting production, whilst their last two album have just been vomit inducing imo.

Well the stuff from the last 2 albums sounds better live. I had the great fortune of going to the oxford gig they did in 2001.

As for hail to the thief it's great. There back on track with this one.

Hey, I was at that gig too! Awesome, awesome day. All the support bands were great too. Radiohead were amazing, and they played Creep!

Not even the sub-tropical hurricane could ruin the day.

Hehe I remember getting soaked to the skin - the heavens opened right at the end of the concert. Great day though - hope they do something like that again!
