No BAFTA nomination this year... but one for X Factor and DOI!

I'm a bit disappointed that both X Factor and Dancing on Ice both got BATFA nominations this year, and Strictly didn't.

That is absolutely ridiculous.

Who decides these things? It's not the public, is it? I can't believe people still fail to see how much better SCD is than any other reality show on TV. You only have to look at what people have written on the other thread, 'I love SCD, because ...' Grr.

Hmmm...both shows on ITV. Coincidence I'm sure

I think the award itself is devalued if SCD is not among the nominees.

Cannot see how X Factor could be nominated - that show gets more stale each year (hence the planned re-vamp), whereas SCD gets better each year! DOI is also not a patch on SCD's production values - I'm confused!

Yes I'm sure it has nothing to do with the Bafta's being shown on ITV this year (I think).

Ignoring it for the Audience Award and now this... Completely and utterly ridiculous

Its not fair. As much as I love Torvil and Dean, Total Legends, Why the Hell are X factor and DOI there when Strictly isn't. Whats the world coming to!

I think DOI totally deserves to be there as it's still pretty new and fresh, and although I haven't ever watched it myself I have heard nothing but praise for it.

However, I do think that the X Factor format is pretty tired by now - it's the same every year, nothing ever seems to change. I also feel the same way about SCD, to be honest. I don't think that either really deserve a nomination, as it should go to a newer show, a different idea.

I honestly think if you HAD watched it, you would see that it is just a clunking, ugly rip off of SCD and you wouldn't be very impressed. It isn't new and fresh - it is a pale imitation of programmes it seeks to replicate. The celeb-pro rapport is lamentable, the costumes are garish and pantomimey, the ice-dancing is amateur and, until the latter stages, painful to watch.

DOI lacks all the beauty, integrity and originality of SCD and is just not in the same league. Also, to place SCD in the same 'stale' bracket as X Factor is just not fair. SCD is such an inspired and wonderful format, it goes from strength to strength.

The main premise of X Factor is to parade the same old Mariah Carey wannabes, whilst laughing at unfortunate saps who make fools of themselves in the early auditions. Cynical and exploitative - SCD is none of these things. It celebrates dance, hard work, talent and enthusiasm and its a disgrace that it isn't nominated for a Bafta. So there !

(Am only feeling brave enough to challenge *Becca* cos have been out and had a few tinctures )

I have to say that I loved the first two series of the show, but after that, yes, I believe it got stale. It's just not exciting anymore, it's too predictable, and it's exactly the same every year. A few no hopers get slagged off by theatre judges with no presidence in the world of ballroom dance, yet get saved by the public every week. The same handful get scored highly every week and because of that they aren't popular with the public and have a rather untimely demise.

I really don't find it inspiring at all, and also don't feel that it celebrates dance in any way whatsoever. I think all reality television is pretty short lived, it all passes it's sell by date pretty quickly and SCD is no exception. There are only so many times that the same idea is going to work. Where else is there for the show to go now, without it getting boring? They added more contestants, they added all sorts of strange dances . . . I really don't see where they can take it.

It deserved a BAFTA for the first and second series, yes, but now - I don't think so.

Am just an armchair dance afficianado and I really do understand that that's nothing like being involved in the 'proper' world of dance BUT as said armchair afficianado (and probably representing a sizeable chunk of the tv audience) I can say that, for me, SCD is unlike any other 'reality' tv prog - it celebrates rather than denigrates. The continuing 'freshness' is provided by the new 'celebs' (ok, ok, hate that word) each series and the huge enjoyment and pleasure from watching them learn (or try to) a fabulous skill - and to witness the dedication, patience and talent of the pros.

Eurgh - still have hangover so better shut up now I know you don't really rate SCD so much now Becca but I promise you its given lots and lots of people enormous pleasure and delight. Hope it continues to do so for a long time to come

Btw - has it been nominated in the past for a Bafta?(blushes at lack of research into topic am ranting about !)

On lighter note (hate confrontation ) am going to see Vincent and Flavia next week and had dream last night that I arrived at venue in my pants and an old black woollen shawl. Nothing else

It was nominated in 2005, after the second series. It lost out to 'Im A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here'.

Confession time - didn't really connect with SCD until Series 3 (stupidly put off by Claire Sweeney in 1st series/Jill H in 2nd - am v perverse ) So I guess I probably don't have the same warm memories of the original 2 series so am happier with the direction SCD3 and 4 have gone - altho' hated the awful Dance Off and agree it's not good to have too many couples.

Its the dancing - I just love the dancing and envy your talent and involvement in the 'real' dance world! Will probably continue to appreciate it all from comfort of armchair, then when I'm 80 I'm off to Buenos Aires to dance the AT with a sexy Argentinian octogenarian

Am just glad that SCD has at least been nominated for Bafta in the past

I think that fact demonstrates what the general British public seem to enjoy most - and could explain why The Sun sells more copies than any of the more 'intelligent' newspapers, and why relatively few people appreciate the magic and artistry of ballroom & latin dancing in more than a transitory way.

Aww, that's a shame, I really thought that both Claire and Jill were the most fabulous contestants, both my favourites in their respective series.

Also that the first two series had something rather magical about them - with it being so new, nobody knew originally how well it would go down, whether it would be a disaster for dancesport and for all involved or whether it would work and become popular. It was exciting, unpredictable and I also think it was really fresh and entertaining.

For me, no recent series has been able to compare to that kind of 'atmosphere' so to speak. It had a certain sort of magic about it.
