This is obviously not strictly evidence in your case, but before buying a plasma TV I asked Panasonic this question:

For plasma TV (specifically TH50PX600) what is your guaranteed 'dead pixel'
limit:
a) New - out of the box.
b) During the warranty period.

The reply was:
"In response, I would explain that Three dead red and blue pixels are allowed within the centre of the screen and six red, green, and blue pixels are allowed in the outer area of the screen. NO FULLY LIT PIXELS ARE ALLOWED IN EITHER AREA." (Their capitals)

I'm pleased to say that so far (a few weeks) all pixies are behaving. (When our DVD has no disc in it, it conveniently displays a solid grey screen which is useful for checking.)

BTW, just to confuse the matter further - replacing the screen doesn't guarantee the replacement will be defect free - the new screen is subject to the same number of acceptable duff pixels as the original one was.

good point , but if it comes to it , would it be worth to them to replace the screen anyway

Depends how Comet work?, certainly from a manufacturers point of view the sets are repaired, not replaced. If Comet replace the set for you, they may well be stuck with it - it's HIGHLY unlikely the manufacturer would take it back, particularly if it's just for a duff pixel not covered by their warranty.

Even when you replace the screen the old one has to go back to the factory to be examined, and if they decide it's not faulty then they won't pay the warranty claim.

so ............ the comet engineer has been and gone , and .............. he is going to get a new screen for it ( remember this is for one stuck pixel !!!! ) , and if one is not available the set will be replaced or refunded !!!! , no arguments or nothing , and he spotted it without me pointing it out , now i just need to wait and see the outcome , and having got this far it had better not have any stuck / dead / whatever pixel's if it is replaced !!!!

What comment would you like me to give?

The comment of the engineer not adhering to company policy?

The comment of the engineer probably going to see a disciplinary for his actions of repairing a non-faulty set?

I do hope they don't SED this TV, they'll never get the money from LG...

so the engineer would potentially throw his job away or get a disciplinary record by deliberately doing this , cant see that somehow

edit --- SED ????

Service Exchange Document.

The engineer has gone against the policies of the company, maybe he's a new engineer? who knows?

The fact is, he's completely defied what he's supposed to do. If the parts not available, or LG won't finance it, then his manager won't be a happy guy when he has to SED the item and Comet lose the value of the repair.

i dont think the way he was talking he was a newbie , mind you , when i was talking to him , he sounded right pissed off as there was supposed to be 5 of them covering the north east and 2 were off sick

edit --- i am still curious to know if a new panel will be available , i know it is not that old a set but the way they get updated nowadays , you never know

Sounds about right, to be honest.

The money for being a Comet Engineer isn't the best...

update ---- got a phone call this morning saying they could not fit the new screen on monday as they had yet to source the part , so i questioned what would happen now , the answer was , i had to give them 14 days to find a new screen from the original inspection date , if they could not get one then i would be entitled to a new tv , when i questioned the new tv bit i was told i could also have a refund if wanted , the question is , ami being unreasonable if i said i didnt want to wait 14 days to find a new screen ??? , i base this on my own experiences at work where i can get an answer within 24 hours if something i need is available and also a timescale to deliver , do you think i am being too suspicious in thinking that they cant get a new one and are stalling for time , or not , thoughts please

You'll get no where asking for time, the 14 days will be used to go around various suppliers to supply a new screen, repairing a TV is much cheaper than replacing it.

They'll do everything they can to provide a replacement panel.

You'll be able to source spares, yes.

But Comet have their own suppliers (cost) so will use those, the slip of paper is an estimate, not a guarantee.

Legally you have to give them reasonable time to fix the problem (repair or replace). In the worst case scenario, if it ended up in court, then claiming now that you can't wait 14 days, when the fault is one duff pixel, might be construed as being unreasonable. Don't rock the boat too much

thanks for that , i reckon it is more a case of knowing where i stand with them , and that comes from the job i do , i need to know where i stand so things happen when they should happen , mind you , that is in regard to a multimillion pound chemical plant where downtime is measured in multiple thousand pounds of pounds

We had a stuck pixel on our monitor a few years ago and they replaced it without even looking at it! I'm glad as it was probably within their limits despite being bright yellow (probably a green and blue stuck at the same time then). I couldn't have lived with it.

Well jacked in last xmas after 13 years in Edinburgh.

Only after being away do I see how professional they are in comparison to a few of the companies I have been with since.

Still wouldnt go back though

Be interesting to see how long it takes them to change the panel?, it's not a terribly long job - certainly should be no longer then collect one day, and bring back the next - or collect in the morning, and return in the afternoon.
