I've a question for those people who understand Freeview and PVRs. When I record Dr Who I get two soundtracks, the normal one and a second that is generally silent except for the occasional description of the action e.g. "a barmaid enters the room".
The Radio Times says that you can listen to some broadcasts with directors commentary (e.g. last Fridays), but I these didn't seem to get saved on my PVR. Any idea how to get these (besides iTunes)?
Thanks

Audio Description is extra naration to help blind people follow the plot when something visual is going on which is not obvious from the sound. Not all boxes support it. I assume that there are special freeview boxes for blind people which do support it and which are optimised for use by a blind person.

I don't think the same technology is used for the commentaries. I think these are broadcast separately on the interactive channels 301 and 302, which can be viewed on all boxes. I am not sure how you can timer record them as they have no EPG and you do not know which of the two channels will be used in advance.

The only mainstream box that had an audio description option was a version of the Netgem I-player. It's no longer available. I've seen an extremeley expensive cobbled together loking audio description PVR ( over £500 IIRC) but don't know if it's available.

The Doctor Who commentary for S3 Ep1 was only broadcast on the Friday 6th April repeat on Freeview channel 302 as an interactive option. The stream cut off half way through the "Next Time" trailer. There was no commentary on any showings of Ep2 on Freeview (Castaway, Cricket and U21 rugby being given the interactive streams when I checked my PVR recordings). If I'd liked episode two more I might have remembered to watch it with commentary on my satellite box.

Very few of the series 2 commentaries made it to Freeview AFAIK I certainly only caught 3 or 4 last year and some of those may have been on satellite.
