Help ! Monitor or HD LCD TV
I am looking to replace my ageing CRT PC monitor and I am looking for some advice on what to buy.
I am looking to use the monitor / TV to use with my desktop PC which has both VGA and DVI output with supported resolutions up to 2048 x 1536. A screen size of between 20" and 26" is about right for my needs. I use my PC for games as well as video editing, so will be looking for a widescreen monitor / TV. I am undecided between a dedicated PC monitor (such as the Samsung SM225BW 22" widescreen unit - £260 on ebuyer) or an HDTV such as the latest Samsung R87 series (26" model) or the Sony Bravia S2030, again in 26". Whilst the PC monitor obviously has a higher resolution at 1680 x 1050, it only has VGA and DVI connectivity. I am looking to buy the PS3 and a High Def camcorder (probably the canon HV10 or possibly the Sony HC3) and so would be looking to make use of the HD TV's additional inputs. The downside of course being that the HDTV resolution is only 1366 x 768. I like the idea of multiple inputs on a monitor such as Scart, component and HDMI however I am concerned that the lower resolution on the HDTV of 1366 x 768 possibly makes this a bad choice. What is the general opinion here, or is there an alternaive solution to my requirements for a high res monitor with a variety of inputs? Many thanks |

You say you will be using it for games and video editing, so youve basically answered your own question... Go for the Samsung SM225BW 22".
DVDs would look better on the 26" sony/samsung HDTVs because less upscaling has to take place and they both have clever picture processing. Unfortunately if your doing video editing, these picture enhancements will not be a true representation of what you have actually produced. The PC monitors will just take what there sent and display it. -Chris |

Thanks Chris.
However, assuming I go for the higher resolution PC monitor, what are my options for connecting a PS3 or other HD input? Are there any PC monitors that have HDMI connectivity or is there a way of passing a HDMI signal via my PC to the monitor? Thanks |

If the monitor supports HDCP over DVI, then you can use a HDMI to DVI adapter to connect a PS3.
Its not really a good monitor to play PS3 on because the PS3 can only output 4:3 and 16:9. Most widescreen PC monitors are 16:10, which means you either get borders at the edges or distortion. Why do you want to play PS3 on it anyway ? (Shoddy console ).Basically: stick to PC monitors for PCs, and HDTVs for video. -Chris |
