Hi,

My old system used to comprise a Sony Freeview digibox (a VTX-D800U) and a Matsui VCR attached to a Samsung TV.

A few days ago I bought a Sony PRV with HDD, DVR and in-built Freeview tuner (an RDR-HXD560).

Is there any way I can hook up the old Sony digibox (the VTX) with the new Sony PRV so I can watch one Freeview channel while recording an other?

I should mention that the TV, the VTX digibox and the new Sony PRV each have two Scarts.

Thanks

Steve

Well, obviously you could connect the Freeview box SCART directly to the TV, but AV2 on the TV probably isn't RGB compatible. I presume that's why you're asking for advice?

If you want RGB picture quality from both devices I suggest you daisy-chain them, using only one SCART on the TV (AV1).

Connect the AV1 (output) SCART on the PVR to the VCR SCART on the Freeview box. Connect the 'TV' SCART on the Freeview box to the AV1 SCART on the TV. When you switch on one device it should override the other. You may possibly have to put the Freeview box into standby in order to switch the focus to the PVR; it depends on the TV.

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm a complete novice at this sort of thing and have very little idea of what's possible.

How would I connect the Freeview box directly to the TV? Do I split the signal coming from the aerial, plug an aerial lead into the back of the Freeview box and connect the box to the TV with the Scart? Is it that straightforward?

I've just tried introducing the Freeview box in between the TV and PVR as you suggested, but can't get any channels (I tried rescanning). This might be a stupid question, but do I have to connect the Freeview box to the aerial via a splitter? I'd sort of been hoping the Freeview box could accept an aerial signal from the PVR, but it looks not.

It should be assuming your signal is robust enough. You may need to select the correct AV input on the TV manually.

the best way to set this up would be to run a scart lead from your new dvdr into the TV
then run a scart lead from the old freeview box into the TV
that way you could record freeview using the new dvdr, and watch another freeview channel on the the old box

your main aerial lead could run in any of the freeview boxes first,
so you do it like this,
main TV aerial into new dvdr, then run a aerial lead from the dvdr into the old freeview box, then run a lead from the old freeview box into the TV
Hi, I think my aerial query has been answered. I got the above advice from another forum (Computer active) and it seems to work very well. Many thanks to the people who got back to me.
