Most hated soap characters - Les Battersby and Phil Mitchell
jlighthi
02-04-2003
I have just watched the odious Phil Mitchell and Les Battersby cry on EastEnders and Corrie respectively - are we supposed to feel any sympathy for these most horrible people. Les is an unpleasant piece of work - and I find Bruce Jones very unconvincing. I hate his scenes!

Phil Mitchell has gone from a pleasant bully to in the last few years the nastiest, most hateful soap character. The way he treated Lisa, mark, Sonia and Jamie was appalling - not much better than Trevor really. His crying after he sent his geordie lass packing was awful. Can't wait for his departure. What is his appeal?

I HATE Phil Mitchell. When he's down he always suffers more than anyone else; when he's up he thinks he has the right to march in anywhere and take what he wants. If he kicks somebody's door down, why don't they call the police? Unbelievable.

Les is just a lousy actor. Irritating when he's being comical he's totally unbelievable when he's playing for high drama. But I actually prefer him to Janice, who is also a nasty piece of work.

My most hated character at the moment is Big Barry, who looks like his knuckles should be dragging along the floor. He's nasty, and spiteful, and bullying, and selfish, and rude, with no social skills at all and loves being the centre of attention.

Barry is like an irritating child, I can't WAIT till he goes.

And I hate Phil, too...I don't rate him much as an actor, and the way he gets away with everything is beyond annoying, plus he's on our screens ALL the time. Is he popular with the public or something (surely not?) because he's just constantly THERE, just get rid of it...

Les is pretty crap, too, though I've always liked Janice. Probably because she's far better as an actress, and the character is quite funny and can still be "serious"...

<MOAN ON>

I think that Les character should be developed into a slightly less mouth person. The ONLY time I thought he portrayed some believable emotion was when Toyah was leaving and he opened up as to how he felt about her and how proud he was. I thought that was quite a powerful scene in Corrie. Fair enough have him in the show for comic value - the story line with him and Kirk pretending to be gay to fool the council was great and laughs like this are what makes the Street better than Eastenders (IMO). However I just can't buy this loudmouth and obnoxious side to him. In real life he would be banned from the pub, and people would refuse to stand near him at the bar (Martin/Curly etc), and in many pubs he would also be beaten up / roughed up on a regular basis due to his big mouth - he is an easy target being a bit of a loner, and not really having a big build. But this has only happened once when the cop duffed him up on Monday. RE-WRITE LES ROLE IN CORRIE PLEASE.

As for Mitchell. I hate him even more. He is a nasty evil man with a godawful semi-beard that is not reflective of most of the UKs shaving habits. He should be banged up for life for being in posession of an offensive stubble. And what did that pretty police woman (who was a nurse in Corrie when I last saw her) see in him. Grant was probably more appealing to the ladies if you go for the Neanderthal type blokes.

Last nights episode with Les going off on one in the Rovers was an ideal opportunity to bar him from the pub. Instead no bar staff were to be seen.

I've just read the beginning post to thsi topic again. Yes, after he let that Geordie lass go, he let out a childish roar! It was funny, but at the same time it was ridiculous! I hate Phil!

Most hated soap characters

Eastenders is my favourite home grown soap, but wish they would get rid of Barry,Vicky and Spencer they all drive me mad.
I think Phil is a pretty good actor and would be sorry if he left . I havn't watched coronation street since they brought that twit Steve McDonald back and i can't stand that ginger lass either. Now in brookside they could get rid of moan alot Ron,and Sammy, but she hasn't been it for some weeks. Rant over.

I'm quite wondering where Phils obsession with Ian is going to end? One of them is for a fall, I'm just hedging my bets so far on which one.

Well, knowing Phil Mitchell it will last for as long as he lives.

Corrie character Les is pretty irritating; it does seem like over the top acting most of the time, but there have always been these "vaudevillian" type characters on the show. I quite like Fiz; she and Kirk have only been seeing each other for a short time over here. So far they seem to make a good couple.
We used to get East Enders, but not anymore ( I think it is shown on the specialty channel BBC Canada, which I cannot afford to subscribe to). When I did watch the show a couple of years ago, I didn't find any of the characters very likeable. The Mitchell brothers were probably the worst, but I personally always disliked Frank Butcher.

When I started this topic - I thought loads of people would tell me off - saying I was talking rubbish and giving lots more people who are disliked. It is quite amazing how many of us dislike these same two characters.

Nailz - I don't think if Les's character was rewritten that it would improve Bruce Jones's acting. Am not convinced by him. Thought Janice, Leanne and Toyah are/were great in the show - but not him! Who would feel sorry if he went to prison? Not me!

And although I do not hate Steve McFadden's acting - he epitomises all I hate about EastEnders. He is nasty, unpleasant, selfish, evil and just plain horrible. Why the geordie lass had any feelings for him after hearing what he did to Lisa - just escapes me! And Phil was OK before. Never liked him but he was decent enough. I am delighted he is leaving the show - and hope he does not return!

I think Sonia in EE is pretty awful. I mean apart from looking retarded and sounding like she's got permanent sinusitis, her personality is foul as well.

Although I am a born and bred Canadian, I've lived in England on a couple of occasions, and am married to an Englishman. So, hopefully I'm not too different from other Corrie fans.

Yeah like Rita giving her worthless advice to anyone who'll listen, Vera and Jack wheeling out their tired old music hall double act routine or Janice doing her Pikey Wife Impression...... Bring Back Dickie!

Good descriptions, Kefka! When I mentioned "vaudeville"in my previous post, I should have said music hall - that's the British term. It seems there's always been a double act going on over the years - Stan and Hilda, Vera and Jack, Gary and ?, his wife's name escapes me at the moment.
