I am lucky enough to own a Panasonic Viera plasma.
Ive heard some people say it can suffer from Plasma burn like the old pc monitors (which is why the screen savers were created!).

If i am listening to the radio through my television it displays a static text box.

Can this static text damage my screen?

Maybe if it was on there for hours & hours, its a lot harder to screen burn a Plasma now days, especially after the first few hundred hours.

I own a plasma but I wouldn't have the same logo/text box on the screen for more than a couple of hours.

Normally now days you get image retention which goes after a minute or 2 once you have switched channels.

Don't think this should be too much of an issue with a newish Viera. I have a Pioneer 427xd. The kids watch the music channels a lot and these have fixed bars and logos and I have not seen a problem.

However, if you like listening to radio via your TV a lot, it might be an idea to hook your STB up to an amp, then you do not need the TV on. This will probably get better audio and save you money (and the environment ).

If I have the radio on through sky on all day I turn the TV off and just have the sound through the surround sound.

My theory is that I am saving electricity as well as stopping plasma burn

Ive had screen burn a couple of times on my Panasonic (falling asleep with a static image on screen or playing the xbox and you can still see your energy bar in the corner of the screen even though you have switched the console off) but it seems to go away after a few minutes if you switch to a moving picture in the background and let it play a bit.

That's not 'screen burn', it's 'image retention'. Two completely different things.

Sh*t!

I've just ordered a 26" Samsung LCD with the intent to listen to radio as well as Freeview

It was supposed to replace my hifi.

Am I screwed then in regards to the screen-burn?

No, it's only Plasma which have the screen burn problem, and that's really only a concern for the first few months of use.

However, I'm rather bemused at the idea of using a flat-screen TV for a stereo?, the audio quality is really pretty naff (no room for decent speakers), and it will cost a LOT more to run than a stereo system - I would imagne between five and ten times as much!!.

Not very eco-friendly?, and much poorer performance as well.

Well the thing is I only use my HiFi to listen to the radio in the bedroom these days (DAB is reserved for use at night with headphones) and it takes up a lot of space along with my 14" CRT.

So I was hoping I could sort of kill two birds with one stone by getting the LCD and getting rid of both hifi and old telly.

Suppose I could use the DAB but its tiresome having to constantly unplug the earphones!
