i have a wharfedale dvd750 and a hifi system with a dolby prologic decoder and amp. i see that dvds are dolby digital, does this mean that they do not offer dolby prologic and i will need to upgrade my hifi to one with a dolby digital decoder and amp. the input into my hifi is via two phono leads not like the 5:1 set up for digital all help appreciated rob |

The answer to your question is yes. Your DVD player should have a downmixing function (could be automatic or manual (i.e. in setup options)) This should downmix your 5.1 signal to a 4.0 signal (which is dolby surround/prologic)
I would strongly recommend though that you upgrade your amp to a Dolby Digital 5.1 amp because the sound quality is soooo much better. Hope that helps! |

To keep in Dolby Digital specs a DDigital encoded DVD must have two (stereo) channels (Pro Logic is encoded in a stereo stream) so no downmixing is necessary.

Are there any TV's which come with a dolby digital speaker set?

I know there is a 50" toshiba with "Dolby Digital" but it has the front and side speakers integrated into the set with only two external speakers. My advice is to go with separates every time. You get much better sound quality.
