I think they should do it that way as well.
Me too. I'd go for any option that harms his character the least - of course that's with the fact that he will be a rapist

Someone has made an interesting point on WW:

Denise Denise. I'm glad someone remembered Denise, and that those characters who did, were intrinsically involved with her from many years back. Shabnam is the daughter of one of her best friends, Dean is her stepson. I was glad that when Shabnam called on Dean to help Denise, he stopped what he was doing and went to help. Dean isn't all bad, and finding out the rape storyline about to ensue, I wonder if this is going to be as straightforward as has been hinted in the latest release.

I also wondered if it wouldnt be straightforward but if it's harrowing....i dont see how it couldn't be? It must be violent.

I haven't been able to watch the last couple of weeks but hearing he had scenes with Stacey, Shabs and Denise (whom i've wanted him to share scenes with for ages) makes me sad for where they're taking him. He has tons of connections to other characters and potential friendships

Hopefully we'll get some more info about Dean's state of mind leading up to it and we can then try and guess how they will write the storyline.

I've been thinking about this. I know of two near rape cases in Soap. Mark/Lisa in EastEnders and David/Tina in Corrie. David made a move on Tina when she was dating his best friend Graeme. She rejected him but he didn't take no for an answer - he pushed her backwards onto the sofa but when Tina asked "are you going to rape me?" David came to his senses and left. In EastEnders, when Mark found out about Lisa's affair with Phil he felt very betrayed and Phil didn't help matters by winding Mark up. Mark then did get very angry and jealous. That did come across as slightly violent - when they were arguing he nearly did lose control but he stopped himself. Lisa got away and Mark later admitted to his mom what had nearly happened.

Dean/Linda might hopefully be a cross between both - maybe we see him push her onto a sofa/bed or something and then it just cuts away and we see Dean afterwards drinking or running his hands through his hair and staying indoors for days - something like that and Linda lying on the bed in shock. In Forsyte Saga, Soames and Irene argued over her affair with a painter and he pushed her onto the bed and - well in that it was shown more than I expected but it looked more as though he lost control than that he attacked her for the power and control. In all three cases, I had compassion though I wasn't any less shocked when it happened/nearly happened. They may have an element of violence (hence the "harrowing" scene) but leave the rest to the viewers imagination and then show Linda in shock, Dean crippled with guilt and neither able to meet the other's eye and avoiding one another.

Maybe they are trying to show Dean's softer side before the rape so he doesn't seem like a completely horrible person (helping with Denise and being concerned for her).

I really want some more detailed spoilers too now - I want to know what is going to happen. I am not liking the thought of this storyline any more though .

I really do hope they somehow explore his relationship with Shirley and what really did happen to him in prison. Suppose we will just have to wait and see what happens and how it will all pan out.

Yeh it's just a waiting game now. I just want us to find out about his time in prison as well - not so it can be used as an excuse, but so it is actually spoken about!!

Yep, and I hate waiting around! Matt seems pretty happy though going by that picture on Instagram!

Exactly, once it is spoken about it will give more depth into the Dean character and to help viewers understand his circumstances more!

I agree. It would make a nice change to have someone who is more three dimensional - both Finn O Connor and Frank Foster became one dimensional and evil. What happens with Linda might well be a one off but he does still have to be punished for it of course.

At least we know it's happening so we can prepare ourselves. Would have been a bit of a shock if they'd held back spoilers for it!

It sounds like Matt has come round to the idea and as an actor it's a very challenging story to portray. He'll do it really well and hopefully it will lead to lots of exciting roles for him.

Obviously for Dean it's not good as he will most likely not come out of this at all well. Like we've been saying I really do hope we will learn all about his past and problems as part of the storyline.

It does sound from the TV interview he did that he didn't know about it before he agreed to come back but it does seem a bit odd that he wouldn't have been told. I guess once he'd signed on he probably have little choice - he could have not come back at all of he'd been unhappy about it before signing up. Interestingly it seems he was worried about whether he could pull it off rather than the effects on his character or whether he would do such a thing.

I wondered if it was deliberate so that when it happens it's more of a shock for us and them. Denise and Shabnam's reactions will be interesting as well as Stacey and Lauren's.

Hmm...I really don't know how Dean will be written. Am I the only one who wouldn't actually be shocked if it was violent and Dean knew exactly what he was doing? I'd like to think we'll be seeing this vulnerable, messed up guy who does something awful in a moment of madness, but I'm unfortunately not convinced that will be the case.

No I agree. I'd like the latter too but at the moment I'm thinking they will go down the route of it being violent. But that doesn't mean that they can't show his nice side before then or make viewers sympathise with him before the act. It would just make it more shocking.

Matt says that viewers won't be expecting what is to come - so will they be expecting it to be violent or more of a 'mistake' (can't think of a better word). But then he does say that he is in love with her so would he be violent with her if he's in love with her?

Yeh it's all a bit muddled at the moment - what are we supposed to think? I think (and hope!) that we're supposed to be thinking that Dean will be violent - we've seen him be creepy and not interested in Linda's feelings, but maybe he won't be? He may not think that he's even done anything wrong? That would then show how messed up he is.

The viewers will expect it to be violent because the majority of rapes (Finn/JP, Trevor/Little Mo, Graham/Trevor, I mean Graham/Little Mo) are but f Dean has genuine feelings for her, it will hopefully be a one off mistake as in sexually losing control with someone he fancies rather than torturing her in the most horrific way possible for power and control like the Finn/JP case.

Yes I hope you're both right. Didn't Kellie say something about changing the viewers perception of rape? I would think that just people would think it would be done by some stranger while walking down a dark street at night.

Yeh, it's been mentioned in many articles that the storyline is about changing perceptions.

Hi, I've been reading this thread for a while now and decided to register to post on here!
I find Dean's character fascinating! Although I agree with you guys that's not what I wanted for him but the rape SL doesn't come as a surprise especially after the kiss scene and thinking back of Matt's interview on Sunday's Brunch it all made sense.
I'm very interested in the buildup leading to this crime. I wonder if it will come after some frustration or if he will misinterpret something from Linda. I have no idea! I can't see him as a cold blooded evil person and I don't think he's a serial rapist! My theory is the moment of madness, especially if Matt's said in an interview that Dean has genuine feelings for Linda, that will probably happen in a matter of seconds and he will not accept the idea that she can resist him because as we've seen he's so deluded when it comes to Linda! He will commit the crime under some kind of sexual impulsion he can't control ! I also wonder if he will be drunk or under the influence of drugs as I think some people suggested he could take drugs!
I don't think there will be any other scene of physical violence before the rape, perhaps some emotional blackmail like threatening her to reveal to the children that she's not married with Mick. But again I don't know.
Obviously at some point in the aftermath of the storyline, they will have to explore his past, his mental health, his state of mind and doing that is not to excuse or justify his crime in any case but more to attempt to understand why he did it!
Is it 100% certain he was raped himself in prison?
Anyway I hope we'll get more clues very soon!
I'm looking forward to this SL in terms of Matt's acting but dreading it for Dean at the same time. I find it sad especially after last night when he showed his caring side towards Denise! He's a very complex young man with a troubled and dark soul but also a gentle caring side!

Hi blueorange and welcome to the thread and the forum

It's never been confirmed that he was raped but there have been lots of hints.

I don't know if you saw this back in 2008, but the scene at 4:05 has made me think that he was raped in prison since that aired.

http://www.veoh.com/watch/v6372296RJfkkXqm?h1=Deano's+last+day+on+Albert+Square

I also think it will be a 'moment of madness' that he will regret. I just hope we find out more about his past before this storyline starts.

I agree. The Linda/Dean case will be very complex, which is probably a good thing.

When they say it's about changing perceptions, they could mean in terms of both victim and perpetrator.

I can't believe that some people still blame the victim (rolls eyes) and yes, although sometimes a woman/man can be raped by a stranger when walking home late at night in the dark, sometimes the perpetrator can be known to the victim - these things are common sense.

I can understand that it might be difficult for Linda to speak out if it's a family member though - she wouldn't want to rip the family apart. Kat kept what Harry did secret for years because she didn't want to break Charlie's heart. Also, different people deal with things differently as we saw with JP and Nancy in Hollyoaks.
