More helpers for the doctor

I remember in previous Doctors he sometimes had more than one assistant. I actually think that if the current Doctor had three helpers would prove to be very fascinating with having to interact with more people who may have interesting characters and also one wouldn’t be bogged down with the relationship stories between him and Martha.

I really do think that to keep the Doctor fresh new assistants could be the key. We have seen how successful shows like Angel and Buffy have been with having more than helper. I actually think it would be interesting to have one of the assistants as having a dark character whom may not always be so trustworthy.

Ahhh yes, like Turlough - assistant to the 5th Doctor, alongside Tegan and Nyssa?

ITA. Nothing against Martha as I really like her, but I was just thinking it would be good with a couple more people.

I look forward to Captain Jack returning, anyway!

The companions have always looked human (even if they were alien: Romana, Adric, Nyssa, etc.).

It would be different if a character with a totally alien face was made a companion. And I don't mean "Mr Spock" ears.

The trouble with too many companions is that they can sometimes have very little to do. I think the shows producers have found that in the past with:

Ian, Barbara and Susan (and later, Vicki);
Ben, Polly and Jamie;
Sarah and Harry
Adric, Tegan and Nyssa.

The sidelined companions are eventually written out.

I wonder how Martha will take to Capt. Jack?

It's been rumoured that Martha's brother Leo may be joining her in the TARDIS as a temporary companion for a couple of episodes.

I hope they do involve other assistants,I think it works better when there is more than one, I used to love the Adric( best assistant ever IMO) and Tegan years.

What chance did he have of any popularity alongside two crackers like Tegan and Nyssa

I certainly have more love for Nyssa (sp) despite the dodgy accent. but i certainly have much more love for the assistant that joined them after - im i right in thinking the one with the dodgy american accent and wearing the swim suit?!! forgot her name. but its her i love!

Davidson was always my favourite doctor. only because i remember him.

sorry - forgot to say... getting back to the discussion. I think that obne assistant is enough with this format of doctor who. it worked well having a couple of assistant when it was a 6 part week by week thing. but i like the way it is. its good to have captain Jack joining them every so often. he is a treat!

Sad news about Martha's brother joining them. i actually like Martha better then Rose. but the short family plot line which we saw in the first episode was just annoying. the best family member was of course Rose's mother. she was funny.

As Mark Gattis said on the DVD of Earthshock if that had been broadcast today the credits would have been squeezed into half the screen while the other half would show a trailer for the very next show

Oh how that would have spolied the whole moment.

I wonder if there is any hope of bringing back the character? Im sure in the realms of sci fi there is,I would be happy as Larry

Careful, you'll have the spoiler police after you like on the Life on Mars story.

Peter Davison was my "first" Doctor and Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) was lovely - accent and all!

In the last ep of 'Torchwood', Cap'n Jack heard the call of the Tardis and 'disappeared'. Maybe that was his 'cue' to pop in at some point on this DW series? Also, Torchwood has shown him (CJ) to be a much darker character. This could set up some tension between him, the doc and Martha. The Sarah Jane/ K9 ep worked quite well in the last series, too.
I'd quite like Ardal O' Hanlon's cat/ 'Brannigan' character from 'Gridlock' to discover a time portal, find the doc and join in on the adventures for a bit.

I think two assitants is the maximum that is workable. They touched on that last season when Mickey joined the Tardis crew and it got interesting because it gave Rose a bit more to do than follow the Doctor around like a lost puppy.

Also, the stories work better when the companion is a human (a human from Earth as opposed to humaniod, Romana-esque) as they represent the audience. I think a full blown non-human looking alien would distract too much from the Doctor himself.
