"The BBC [..] has labelled distributor Fremantle Media's demands as "unrealistic and greedy"...

"BBC director of acquisitions George McGhee said: "If a deal is not reached in the very, very near future, we will withdraw the money and move it elsewhere...

"It has been reported that the BBC, which currently pays around £25,000 an episode, offered in the region of £70,000 an episode and hoped to spin the show out on to BBC3. This was rejected by Fremantle...

"ITV has made an offer said to be £80,000 an episode, but is also understood to be frustrated with the terms Fremantle has come back with...

"Five is also said to be interested.

"McGhee said: "The ball is in Fremantle's court. If the other offers had worked out better for them, we would have heard. We've made a good offer which is about to be withdrawn."

"A Fremantle spokesman said: "Fremantle Media's contract with the BBC is coming to an end and renegotiations are ongoing. Because of this we are unable to comment further.""

I don't like the BBC line "If a deal is not reached in the very, very near future, we will withdraw the money and move it elsewhere...

The BBC still have neighbours until 0ct 2008 so if they were to move it onto BBC Three without any showings on BBC One then that would damage the new ratings for the channel that picks it up. I can't see Neighbours doing well anywhere outside the BBC if thats the case.

It's about time the Beeb started paying more anyway. They're been on to a very good thing paying 20 grand for a show that performs so well, they'd never be able to make their own for that price.

The BBC is between a rock and hard place. The deal they had was very cost effective, and viewing figure are no longer in the double millions anymore. The BBC is spending public money and not public money spent via advertising.

At the end of the day they have been showing the show longer than any other broadcaster, and Freemantle risk the damaging the Neighbours brand moving it to another broadcaster. The BBC can as a previous poster say relegate it to BBC Three to compete against Emmerdale where it would not fair well, but I doubt they would do that.

Well my opinion is that Neighbours is on its last legs in Oz. Seven recently snapped up Kath & Kim which is huge in Oz and their new show will go head to head with Neighbours and to be honest Neighbours hasn't got a cat in hells chance of winning that ratings battle.

Why would the BBC even bother paying 20k+ for a show that might end up being axed in its home country? Moving it to another channel in the UK could only further damage the show and I bet deep down Fremantle know that but greed will no doubt kill this little soap.

They are. They are showing repeats of series 1 to 3 and then the new series starts in September.

It used to go out at 7pm on ABC.

Does it matter if Neighbours is on ITV or Five everyone gets ITV and most get Five, im sure people can cope with a few adverts!!

Business is business at the end of the day and if the BBC cant afford Neighbours then it will go elsewhere. However as I said on another thread the BBC did help to build Neighbours into the show it is today, they also saved it from the axe in the late 80's so they probably feel a bit annoyed by this.

If they do lose Neighbours then I can see them axing the 5.35 edition and moveing it to BBC Three to try and kill the show off before it moves, ITV wouldnt let Five show Home & Away for a year after they won the rights and it did affect the shows audience (being on Five also affected it mind).

If Neighbours leaves BBC One I can see Doctors getting the 5.30 slot, save the lazy Beeb from thinking of something new. Although I'd like to see Master Team back in that slot, who remember that?

I think that is what the BBC will do. They will drop the 5.35 edition and only keep the 1.35 edition going. Doctors will get moved straight into the 5.35 slot and I don't think they will show a second repeat of Neighbours anywhere else, not even on BBC Three. The BBC have the power to kill it off in the UK if they want. Like you say business is business and if it moves channel the BBC will not want it to be a success where ever it goes. Remember they still have the show for the next 15 months.
