I was wondering out of the pair of these what would people go for , im buying this afternoon but havent chosen which one ? Philips 42PF5331 42" plasma or the TOSHIBA 37C3030D 37" HD Ready Digital LCD , there both in the same price range £700 whats peoples thoughts ? cheers.

Plasma, burn problems(not cured yet)twice the cost of electric compared to lcd

LCD, cheaper to run(Greener), Sony have dumped plasma in favour of LCD, have a look at the sony bravia leaflet.

Im an unbiased, but the trade says LCD, and LCD will be at least £100 cheaper to run pa

Again, I only say look at the Sony leaflet(booklet) its spells it out, not buy a Sony. Again plasma run hot,check the watts etc.

The plasma is bigger but likes more power and darker viewing conditions, the LCD is smaller, could suffer from motion blur and might not display blacks/dark colours well.

Neither is intrinsically better than the other; I'd take the time to see both in person, and there some more about the pros and cons of LCDs and Plasma Displays on my HDTV FAQ site. Good luck

To give you an idea on power the Sony 40" lcd KDL-40x2000 uses 205w of power and last years Panasonic 42PX600 plasma used 265w according to the specs. However plasmas vary the amount of power they use according to the brightnesss of the screen. LCD's use a fairly constant amount of power. The test for power consumption as far as I know measures the max draw of power, if true the real gap between LCD/Plasma will be smaller still.

Screen burn is a non-issue with modern plasmas, unless you literally have the same channel logo displayed for several weeks without interruption (how likely is that?). Under those conditions even a CRT would suffer from screen burn!

I went for the toshiba model, seems nice upto now lovely picture. Was told that plasma i looking at was on old model so plumped for LCD.

CRT do not suffer screen burn unless the same logo is left on for a year.

I am not aware of Sony remarking(not remaking) Plasma

Sony have been working on liquid silicone display.

LCD price is coming down and soon will be just as cheap as any other TV.

HDTV will be better for LCD.

I spent a weekend researching this debate. In the end I went with a Pioneer, 42" plasma. If you watch a lot of movies and sports and want to watch it all on a big screen, then it's the three P rule. Plasma, Pioneer or Panasonic. Screen burn-in is not an issue really with newer plasma's. With LCD's you won't have any problems with burn-in, but your more prone to getting dead pixels. Although they say you get better colors with plasma's (deeper blacks), the new sony LCD's are suppose to be very good. So what I say is, if you want a your flat screen to be bigger then 40" go with a plasma. If it's smaller go with a good quality LCD.

After seeing the LCD's they put in at work boy am I glad I bought plasma.

Well after searching through peoples opinions on different forums i found myself going slightly mad, so made a decision to get the toshiba sorry if it isn't to your taste but i can live with that.

As it is your opion that using more electric to run a plasma is of no matter, well that says it all.

As for screen burn, you mention Dull, well this is a town in Scotland, I presume you are refering to this area.

Over 40'' = plasma
Under 40'' = Lcd.

Plasma seems so much clearer with less blurring round faces text etc. A good test is to go to a news channels with the bar at the bottom and even a good Lcd looks pants with the text on it.

Plasma and screen burn to me is the same as Lcd and viewing angle - pertinant 5 years ago but they have both moved on since.

Though, the Hitatchi plasma I was mucking around with a few weeks ago makes me think why do they come with the anti-screen burn option off as default???????

I presume the LCDS at work, were not Sonys?

I just hope you did not buy from COM/CUR.
