10.30pm last night and just coming off the beach with the doggies.

Life is hell.

I have already give like for like figures and they are no where near half the power.
The word in the industry is that sony are going to badge a plasma this year to compete (probably an LG based)
Also Panasonic may be releasing a 37" 1080p LCD using the Alpha IPS panel used in the current 32" screens. They are doing this to give them a 1080P unit in 37" as they cannot do a Plasma in this size.

Calculators were using gas discharge plasma displays (in the early 60's) well before LED and LCD calculators came out (70's).

Well an independant tv dealer from Derbyshire on this sight did say a few weeks ago, plasma use twice the electric to run compared to a bravia LCD of equal size.

I would not know myself, but when ever I visit currys superstore, just by touch alone the plasmas appear very hot where as the LCDs feel cool..

I will agree however unless a high def signal is put into an lcd, the picture quality at equal distance LCD/PLASMA,the plasma is sharper with DTT, but as far as screen burn is concerned I am not so sure it as been sorted.

Well from my profile I live on a mountain,near the famous horsehoe pass, it was daylight last night here until well after 9.00pm. there is a lot to be said for not having light polution of any kind. Except the Sony CRT 29 inch now in its 16th year.

Yep your right I didn't buy from Com/Cur but spent a couple of months viewing all sorts LCDs & Plasmas, this was 12months ago & still during that time I never viewed any LCD Sony included that came close to the same picture quality of any of the Plasmas I viewed.

Even worse the owners at work bought Philips LCDs & they look really bad.

Ok your opinion, I will accept what you mean.

Many thanks, but ill stick with my 29 inch Sony CRT and wait for BBC HD, if its just DTT then my CRT Sony knocks the bravias into fuzz compared like for like.

6 months ago I sought advice on which TV to buy (from a different forum admittedly )
I eventually plumped for a 32 inch Phillips LCD HD ready TV. Now, 6 months later I wish I hadnt bothered.

Watching football on it is hopeless - any quick motion seems blurred and pixelated regardless of the sky + box/TV settings.
Mate of mine hooked his Panasonic 37 inch Plasma up to my sky + box and it blew the LCD out of the water for picture quality. The football (and this was on ITV who by all accounts broadcast at the poorest quality signal) was seemless in the quality and depth of the picture. And as for motion blur...well there wasnt any.

I wasted £900 on the LCD TV and Richer Sounds wont let me have a refund as its not 'defective'. Apparently its - and I quote - "a known issue that LCD is useless for watching football on"

Im sure your LCD will be fine for HiDef material, they are just poor when it comes to Std Def.

HD/SD has nothing to do with the motion blur; that is a function of the response times. We watched a big Sony Bravia LCD showing a BluRay disc movie in a shop and it had noticeable blurring as people moved across the screen, so we went plasma and it is absolutely fine on SD stuff.

Incidentally, don't be fooled by response time specs; they are usually for black/white or white/black transitions (full voltage change). For lesser changes - arguably the more likely case in real use - the response can be much slower. So a high quality 'slow' specification set may be faster in the mid-ranges than poorer 'fast' sets and so actually handle motion better. You need to see the thing in action to see what you find acceptable.

trouble is that you can get reviews on the net, ie for the Sharp LCDs which show it in a good light, then u read "Which" magazine (in the library) which put them near bottom of the pile, who do you believe?

Just my 2 cents, but I've got a 37" Tosh LCD, and the football looks fine to me. No complaints at all!

Why is it when looking at a plasma or lcd picture where a camera is panning sideways there is not a smooth transition but a sort of juddering movement. Also faces look very blotchy and blocky with poor definition. I have noticed this on all these type of plasma and lcd screens I have seen but never on crt.

Well personally I've never believed anything Which reviews, years back they reviewed CD players, and they reviewed two absolutely identical players (made by Sharp). One had Sharp on the front, the other Tandy (I told you it was long ago) - the ONLY difference was the label, apart from that EXACTLY the same. They gave the Sharp a good review, and they gave the Tandy a bad review!.

Going back even further they reviewed early colour TV's, their report said:
"one in eight smokes, and one in twenty EXPLODES!"

I've been repairing colour TV's for 36 years, including the very early dual-stand sets, I've never seen one that has "exploded" (and not too many that "smoked").

Your right, my comment was just about LCDs in general when it comes to Std Def was trying to make him feel a little better about his purchase

I think the moral of the story here is to give LCD's a wide berth if you want picture quality. To be honest I cant see any advantage of LCD over plasma whatsoever...or come to think of it, any reason to buy LCD at all.

Only wish I'd realised that sooner....gutted

These argument only really apply to 37-42 sets smaller are nearly all LCD, bigger nearly all Plasma.!

Screen burn can happen within minutes, where I work we have Plasma's and LCD's on display and with the snooker on screen the score has burnt in.

Your own eyes?

I would never trust any magazine for their equipment reviews, the only way is to go out and do the donkey work and physically see the display in action. Not one of the high street stores either, but a dealer who has dedicated room(s) and equipment which has been setup/calibrated professionally. You only have yourself to blame if you have bought a product solely by listening to or reading someone else's opinion and the end results are disappointing.

This is referred to as ghosting, this is temporary and can be fixed with the negative image and through normal viewing. I'd be more worried about getting a dead pixel on an LCD.
