a dealer such as? dealers such as this usually have only a limited range, and then only what they sell (obviously), even then your only seeing what they are piping in (usually an HD loop) and you not seeing it as you would in your own room/s., under different types of lighting, etc.over a period of time. other factors, such as reliability will also not be able to be judged either.

A dealer that is dedicated to home cinema, should have said an independent really.

You can normally take your own material, DVD, HD DVD, all depends on what you are interested in, you are not relying on their material source. Lighting and the surroundings of the demo rooms are more favourably to your room as well, no bright lights, not like the big stores, which is why the user settings on the majority of displays will be on max to compensate and why they look so bad.

Even a magazine can not judge reliability, they have the set for a couple of days then it's sent back. The displays that are used in the demo rooms are used daily so I would say they would have more of an idea about reliability issues with the various manufacturers.

I was always under the impression that ghosting in the trade was when 2 signals where picked up at the same time on the same channel, could you kindly explain what ghosting has to do with screen burn on plasma.

Screen burn is when an image is burnt into the screen, Ghosting is like you said a double image, like an aerial slightly off direction.

You are correct. Same terminology just a different meaning. When it is used in reference to screen burn they are using it to describe the ghost image that's left on the screen.

As for CRT which I have and will retain until BBc/ITV go on line, no I have never known ghosting on my Sony 29 inch now in its 16th year,connected to a new Sony HDD.

I suppose its horses for courses, but with plasma using up to twice the amount of fuel to run them, will plasma last as long as LCD which it appears run cooler, my Sony 29 inch when new was useing only half the power of other brands and I feel sure it is this running cool that makes its last.

Just to add some more comments. I have owned a 32" LCD and have recently got the latest Samsung 37" LCD.

I have never been happy with LCD technology and both have had problems.

I am now exchanging the 37" LCD for a 37" Panasonic Plasma.

I will report my findings when it comes.

At-least you have seen the light and gone plasma.

remember to take you panny out of dynamic mode and set the brightness and contrast at a lower lever for the first 200 hours and then increase as and when you see fit.

great choice of screen. i assume you went for the PX70?

Apparently there is a 'break-in' period with plasmas during which they are more susceptible to screen-burn from bright, static images. So there is a general recommendation to run them at slightly reduced brightness and contrast for the first 200 hours.

Personally, I tried the dynamic and other 'special' settings on ours and they looked pretty horrible - the standard settings look much more natural. I'll try them again when it's 'run in', but maybe they are only effective with HD sources. Mind you, some people seem to think having a colour TV means turning the colour right up to prove it - especially in showrooms

because thats the mode panasonic ship the plasma screens in and its too bright and looks terrible. Cinema or normal should be used.

The first 200 hours are the most important time for a plasma screen as it starts to bed in.

less chance of screen burn or image rentention.

Thanks Catbed and w3dal, I thought that might be the case. My Bravia LCD had a similar problem - it seems a lot of TVs are pre-set to get a good display in the very bright lights of a showroom rather than the lower lighting levels in a home, hence you always need to adjust the settings.

Half the problems seen with LCD and Plasma TVs is down to people not adjusting the sets for the actual viewing conditions in their home.

However, the 200 hours thing looks a bit suspect. I know all electronics needs a certain amount of settle time but 200 hours seems excessive.

Its plasma all the way - better blacks, brighter colors.

You really need to-go to a AV specialist and see one set-up properly, playing true HD and also some of your own movies or games. Going to currys or similar is not going to help you whatsoever.

It's odd how LCD is flavour of the year, apparently on the basis that it is the technology of the future and will eventually have as good a picture as plasma.


But as it isn't yet that good, why buy it now?

It was an exchange. I was one of the first people to get an exchange on the Samsung R7 series from Currys due to the 'panel lottery'. There is a massive thread on this all over AVForums. At first I was happy cause I was getting the latest Samsung panel which was also bigger and had more connections for about £100 extra.

However the new panel definitely has a fault and I thought why not try plasma. I have sky HD and watch a lot of sport and movies. I have an upscaling DVD player. I am not a gamer or use the panel for my PC so Plasma seemed a more fitting choice.

To be fair apart from the fault the Samsung 37R88 seems like a very good LCD and performs well with SD material.

I just hope that my Panasonic 37PX70 will be spot on for my needs. Managed a straight swap with the Samsung (so costing me about £700 as they had discounted the cost as a sign of goodwill).

It all fun and games getting a flat screen TV. It can become an unhealthy obsession. My Mrs thinks I have a problem!!!

Dont be there are thousands and thousands of plasma screen owners who know nothing about the run in period and they have proberly had no issues.

Its just caution and something for you to-do if you want.....

Totally agree with that as the manufacturers don't really mention it and retailers certainly don't.

The man in John Lewis looked at me as if I was a mentalist when I mentioned it.

I demo'd one with Panasonic Blue Ray DVD player and it looked fantastic.

The freeview in there was also impressive but to be fair it's little 32" LCD brother looks a very capable piece of kit.

no mate. i have a pansonic commerical panel plasma screen. like the ones you find in blockbuster video or tescos.

i went the panel route becuase i didnt need freeview as have sky and dont need bolt on speakers as i have a decent sound setup.

going this route enables me to purchase exactly what i want but inserting a hdmi or component board into one of the 4 slots underneath.

As the panel has a resolution of 1024x720 should the Sky settings be 720p or should I leave it as it is at 1080i (this is on my 1366x768 LCD).

Similar question for the DVD player?

I do not really understand scaling - just want best picture.
