I bought a Wharfedale back in February and must have played 30 to 40 DVD's by now. So far every one has played OK (including Sixth Sense), Region 1 and 2. The odd DVD has problems accessing the menu but a reload will usually sort it out. The Matrix scene selection menu does not work but a bit of lateral thinking can get you round that problem.
I've found it very good value for £180. |

I'm going to be buying a DVD player in the next few days.
I am going to get a unit that is multi-region, but am looking at going for a 'budget' option at the moment to get me on the bandwagon. My guess is that DVD-RW will be out and coming down in price within the next couple of years or so, so I'll buy a top line setup then. I have heard all the reviews of the Wharfedale unit available at Tesco's and it seems to be a great buy. I have heard today though that it does not play Sixth Sense... Is this true? Are there any other discs on the market that it doesn't play and how likely is it that others will come out with similar compatability problems? |

The Sixth Sense ran okay on mine.
There is a story within dvdnews.co.uk which tells you how to stop the Matrix menu lockup. |

Richer Sounds offer the Toshiba 2109 DVD player for 229 multi region. This is one of the best DVD players money can buy, (along with the SOny ones) from what I've heared the Wharfedale DVD players are sold out of every single tesco in the country, and there will be no new shipments until June.

Yes, but the Toshiba doesn't play CDRs does it? I am not sure if that is vital, but it could come in useful.

I haven't really looked into it to be honest with you, but I see no reason why it shouldn't play a properly finished CDR

I have gone and got the Wharfedale now... Yes, the packaging looks a bit cheap and the remote control is dire, but the player itself seems fine so far...
I have tried The Matrix and that was OK, and I have Sixth Sense working fine as well... All in all a good buy at £180... Now! Where is the best place to get discs (Region 1 or 2) from? |

As i've said before try http://www.play247.com for region 2 and region 1. Very competitive prices and there is no worry about customs duties because they ship from jersey!!
I think there is a thread which has all of the good online stores in it. Some mentioned were dv-depot and dvdbox office. |
