LCD v Plasma

Boy, do i need help. I had my heart set on either a 32" or 37" Lcd TV for my new house. I want a 37" girlfriend wants a 32"

I had a max budget of £500. Seen quite a few and plenty of advice on here, however tonight in Tesco I saw a LG 42" plasma 42PC1DV for £699, just a tad over my budget but what a picture! I know virtually nothing of new TV tech so which is best?

Its mostly going to be used for Freeview, maybe Sky(not HD) and standard DVDs

You help is appreciated

If you're buying a cheap flat screen TV, make sure you compare it with more expensive ones - usually the cheap ones are VERY disappointing.

As above, I'd pay more for a good (big brand, current line) model smaller set rather than get a cheaper (no brand, outgoing) model at a larger size.

E.g. That budget (£500) would buy a new toshiba 32" model. Or a hanspree 37" I'd go for the Toshiba.

Now if you're talking about raising the budget to around £700 that brings in lots of other sets to consider, including (if you're not so bothered about HD or HD gaming) and happy to go for a plasma the new model panasonic plasmas th-37px70. Or, if you think you'll be wanting to get more benefit out of XBOX360 or HD-DVD/Blu ray then an LCD like the Sony 32s2530 or toshiba 37C models.

Thanks for the advice. I saw this LG LCD model LG 37LC2D
was 1200 now 586

It maybe last years model but its within budget, and has everything I need. At the moment I have a 28" Bush widescreen CRT lol so anything is an improvement in that

Don't be so sure of that - some of the cheap LCDs would leave you wondering why you changed from your CRT at all.

I too was looking at the TVs in Tesco yesterday and was amazed at how bad some of them really are. Since they were all showing BBC HD, it was easy to compare. Just look at moving images and see whether you can tolerate the "fuzziness" of some of the LCDs.

Then you'll want to see what the set you're thinking of buying makes of SD!

I didn't see a single LCD or plasma that came anywhere close to my DLP set for picture quality on BBC HD.

Even the expensive ones are disappointing! So watch out.

CRT in my mind still provides the best picture. Unless you have a HD source running through the LCD/Plasma.

I paid £1500 for a Philips 32" LCD with pixel plus, this was twice as good as the cheap £500-700 tv's. Basically to get double the picture quality be prepared to double the price otherwise dont bother

You get what you pay for !

As Nige says, check the comparison.

Exactly - I ended up with a cheapo 37" LCD for this reason. I thinkwe are another year or two away from sure-thing buys.

So I see no reason to splash out £1,000 in these things yet - cheap or expensive, what you buy today they will be equally redundant in 18 months.
