Big BAFTA Wins Doctor Who & Torchwood

Great night for Who in Welsh awards.

Doctor Who triumphed in eight categories at this year's Bafta Cymru Awards.

David Tenant won best actor, and lead writer Russell T Davies best screenwriter.

Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood also won four awards, including best drama series and best actress for Eve Myles.

Doctor Who's accolades this year included: best lighting director - not camera; best editor; best original music soundtrack; best make-up; best costume, and best director: drama.

Torchwood, meanwhile, also picked up best director of photography: drama, and best design.

BBC Wales is on a real roll at the moment. It makes BBC1's top-rating series (DW), commissioned what was one of the finest series BBC has ever shown (LoM), and Torchwood achieved the highest rating ever on BBC3.

Chwarae teg i BBC Cymru.

Welsh Bafta reckon TW is better than DW? Wonder why?

If TW is your best drama, then doesn't say much for the rest of your output, does it?

I'm glad that a Welsh language programme called 'Taro 9' (a kind of Welsh 'Panorama') won best factual programme.

Well done DW and TW too though. The thing looked quite glam on the telly.

Doesn't Eastenders repeatedly sweep the board at the various English awards? If EE is your best drama, etc...

Anything with Eve Myles in it is going to look glam.

Now, if only TW could sign up Siwan Morris and Ruth Madoc for series 2 I'd be in camp televisual heaven. (Oh, and that cute bloke from Bandit as Ianto's boyfriend...)

Are their ENGLISH BAFTAS?
I didnt even know there were Welsh ones. If theres Scottish ones I've never heard of them.
Thought the B in Bafta pretty much covered all of us.

Didnt know that BBC wales made Life on Mars.
Which forces me to say the following:

THEY THOUGHT TORCHWOOD WAS BETTER THAN LIFE ON MARS???

I think the fact that Life on Mars was commissioned rather than produced in-house had something to do with it. LoM was the best thing that's been on TV in many years.

As for English BAFTAs - no, there aren't specifically English ones. But the manner in which English culture and language so dominates the United Kingdom means that Welsh and Scottish productions will never be recognised at such events. And however the English may dismiss it, Welsh media is just as vibrant and creative - and as good - as the English media.

Torchwood did not deserve to win anything although if it is just Wales then I suppose it was a big thing as well as showing off lots of nice Welsh locations. Really this will not help to improve the series.

So shouldn't it be the WAFTAs, or maybe CAFTAs, or even LLLWTHYGOGOGAFTAs?
