Can anyone recommend a decent sat nav. I was hoping to get one with all the extras like mp3 player and camera detection etc but Im not sure if I can afford that. Looking at spending upto around £200 possibly slightly more if its a lot better but again Im not sure what to look for in this area.

I use a TomTom, i have the older one from when they first came out, but i've tried a few others and none have matched it for brilliance.

You could pick up a decent one like this, less than £200

I have been tempted to buy a sat nav, and I will before the autumn when I know I will be travelling a lot more, but i'm getting a bit tired of all the "why don't just you use a map, they're just a waste of money" comments from friends who don't own one or have never used them.

Satnavs take the fun out of driving.

My brother and I bought my father a TomTom One for Xmas this past year. From what i've seen of it and had a little play with it on xmas day, it seems like a simple unit to use, and from reviews I've read, it has the majority of features the bigger tomtoms have. And you can get one for about £180

I recently bought a ViaMichelin X950 from Asda for £109. It's very easy to use and I haven't had any problems with it. You can either use a postcode or town or exact address. It's got the speed cameras on it. We used it on holiday and it saved us quite a few miles by taking us on different routes to what we would have chosen on the map. I'm very pleased with it.

Might take a look at that one then. Ive always been a bit weary of choosing a cheaper one with all the reports you hear but if there is a cheaper one that does the job then I would consider it.

The only reason I want one when I pass my test (hopefully next week!) is because I cant even find my way around my own town on my lessons so I know Im not going to cope when I can drive.

Hmm, interesting... .

quite tempted to get one, but I don't do enough long distance driving to make it worthwhile at the moment.

Had one that hooked up to my PDA, but unfortunately some idiot slammed the receiver in the car door!

Another Tom Tomer here. I have the basic Tom Tom ONE and its superb, ive only tried a navman apart from that and it didnt come close to being on terms with the Tom Tom.

Id be lost without mine!

There we go.

I feel sorry for anyone who gets runover by you as you are reading your collection of national and local maps and trying to work out a fast route that will avoid traffic jams and will take you past a petrol station.

Pretty difficult to run someone over while you're stopped in a lay-by.

See, this is what is wrong with the pace of modern life. Everyone is missing out on stopping in lay-bys. Used to be an essential part of family holidays. Fantastic. You can even have a picnic.

Satnav? Just another way of killing off our braincells before we reach 50 years of age. You wait. In about 30 years there'll be a massive increase in the number of old people who are wandering around town centres completely unable to find their way from one place to another without a little machine.

God help us all.

But it can get very expensive getting maps for every town you visit. And of course the places that are so small they are not on maps. Or when you need to get somewhere quickly, or find a restaurant - or the nearest hospital...

The rest of your post is a little paranoid and weird

But surely you wouldn't need to find a restaurant if you'd already had a picnic in a lay-by.

Why get so down on satnav? It's just another aid to help you on your journey.

When I went on the M4 recently, there was an accident beyond J13. I simply pressed "avoid roadblock 1 mile ahead" and my Tomtom gave me an instant result for an alternative route, taking me round the accident and back on at J14.

And all that while still driving.

Wouldn't be able to do that on the motorway, "reading a map". Can't stop on the hard shoulder to find an alterntive route can you?

And to the OP. I recommend TomTom.

So a satnav prevents you stopping in a layby now does it?

I think you need help.

Looks like Tom Tom it is then!

Thanks for all the replies.

Reason I wouldnt use a map is that Im useless at map reading and its just easier.

To the anti sat nav person: Do you still use a wind up radio? or a black and white tv? Do you walk to work instead of drive? Im only asking because you seem to not like advancing with technology.

Had NavMan on my PDA and now use TomTom - I love it! Never let me down in over a year and a reasonable amount of mileage. If can take you along some pretty narrow dirt tracks and I've heard that TomTom are working on a new version to allow you to set a preference not to use these roads. Had a number of updates since I bought mine via the website.

Can't fault it. Battery life is good and it will charge as well as run from the Cigarette lighter. Voice quality and reproduction are superb, so you don't have to spend lots of thie watching the display.
