Another TomTom recommendation. We bought a year or two ago and the only thing we don't like about it is the size of it - takes up so much space in your bag and you can't leave it in the car. However the TomToms you can buy now are real slim line ones, and we are thinking of replacing ours with one of the new ones.

If you want to do no more than basic A to B routing then Tom Tom may be all you need. If you want to do more sophisticated route planning then look at the Garmin range.

Do you know if you can get usa mapping for it, and who provides the maps, i was finding it so hard to get american maps in this country for my navman, i went direct to the usa in end. and ended up buying a new satnav unit with american maps, for less then , the maplins one, and less then the cost of the english maps lol

im not sure if you go on the website you can download the user manual and read through it to see if you can get the maps you want, in the product spec it says the sat nav has the following:

Next Generation GPS with MP3 Player and Remote

Large 3.5 inch touchscreen and included stylus showing 2D and 3D view in day/night mode
Full UK mapping with 7-digit post code on SD using Tele Atlas maps
Remote control, car charger and home charger included
MP3 player stores your favourite songs via SD card
Sirf star III antenna for optimum GPS signal
Built-in battery lasts up to 3 hours
64MB flash memory

I got the navman 310/320 from argos, when it was on slae ages ago now, had to take the firs one back that day, cause it would not lock on to any sats, however the 2nd one has been great and locks on within about 3 -4 mins, but then sometimes can take a hour to log on, other times 2 secs, depends where in country i am. most of the time though, does not log on at all, and i am at destination, i would say it fails probably 9 times out of 10, nothing wrong with satnav, it is my location and where i am in country.

Works fantastic comming out of hull and the hospital there. (castlehill not hri)

i know i have saidget the tomtom ONE, however if you want something cheap (ie under £100) there is the Navman F20, which is currently going for £109.99 on ebuyer. And if you use Google checkout, you'll also get an extra £10 off as well, making it £99.99

Actually it is easy (ish )

The easiest way to transfer everything on your old card to the new one is to use TomTom Home (free download from the TomTom website if you don't already have it)

Use that to make a back-up of your existing card onto your PC. Swap SD cards and then use Home to restore the back-up. This will obviously be with your old maps at this stage.

Before upgrading the maps make sure you have a copy of the file MapSettings.cfg in a safe location on your PC. You can either get this from the SD card in your TomTom or the back-up you have just made. Open Windows Explorer and you should find the SD card appears as a drive. The MapSettings file is in the map folder (name will be the same as whatever map you have). Alternatively find the TomTom folder in My Documents. Several sub folders under that will be the copy you have just made of the card in the back-up.

Once you have stored MapSettings somewhere safe upgrade the maps and then copy it back to your card. Make sure you put it in the correct map folder. If you have bought a different map to the one you originally had you will find two map folders (though one may be more or less empty)

MapSettings.cfg stores your personal settings - eg your Favourites - and can get overwritten during a map upgrade. So far I have not found any problems doing this with the map upgrades I have performed.

You can also do the same kind of thing with any POI files that you may have downloaded. (look for files ending .ov2 and any with similar names ending .bmp (the custom icon for the POI)

I have a Navman F20 and it has been excellent. It uses the same mapping software as the TomTom and is very easy to use. They are £129 in PC world and comes with speed camera updates. You will however need to buy the software and cable for it for £14.99 or do what I did and use a usb lead for a digital camera and get the software from E-bay for 99p

Connect your Tomtom to your pc. Forget about Tomtom Home. Open My Computer, your TT should be listed there.

If it is, simply paste your .cfg file onto it.

Ignore that message.

I use this method all the time to keep the two SD cards I use in sync. The message you are getting should give you the option to go ahead anyway. At least I have never had it totally refuse to go ahead with a restore. Though sometimes it needs a couple of pushes to get the message that you REALLY do want to copy all those files onto that card!

If it doesn't simply do it manually in Windows Explorer. You should find a Download sub folder in the ToTom folder in My Documents. Simply copy all the contents of that folder to the SD card which should appear as a drive in it's own right.
